engine mounts on the rails

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flattiesteve, Nov 14, 2003.

  1. Ive seen heaps of neat mounts and brackets posted here in the last coupla years - SamIyams digger motor mounts sticks in my mind as well as his suicide spring perch - if you can post any pics of yours i'd appreciate seeing em and getting a few ideas for my project - PS I'm a big fan of lightning holes

    Cheers

  2. Here's a mount setup that has worked well for close to 40,000 miles on my 32 roadster.
That one with re-pro 48 Ford style biscuits.

The one shown is on my 31 roadster and is the same except it has UHMW biscuits instead of rubber.
The UHMW is quite hard and similar appearing to Teflon but 70% stronger.
    Not quite as slippery either.

A few months back I made up another pair of UHMW biscuits and replaced the rubber biscuits in the 32.
As hard as the UHMW is I thought there could be some vibration in the 32, but as it turned out the mounts are very solid and very smooth.
    No vibration problems at all.
Nice part is, UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) plastic comes in different thicknesses and you can knock out what you need with drill and hole saw.

  3. Here's a close up view of the mounts.
3/16" flat plate bolted on with two 7/16" bolts.
(Use hex head bolts - I used allens on the 32 and when I had to remove the mounts for the insulator swap it was a *****. Hex makes it easy.)
1 1/2" x .120 wall tubing on the very short horizontal run.
1 1/2" cold rolled vertical piece drilled for the 1/2" bolt.
3/16" plate for the frame side horizontal and two large vertical gussets. (I might have some more pics of the frame side if you wish.)

There are some exploded views and a little more info in C-Word's bi-monthly newsletter at FSRA.org.
Go to site map and dowload the most recent issue.

What you can't see is the smaller UHMW biscuit on the underside of the frame mount.
There's a couple different ways to do this one and it's explained in the newsletter.

These mounts are actually on a Lincoln for a sbc, not a rail... but we made them out of 2"x2" box steel with 7/16"i.d. tube for the through bolts. welded to the frame then boxed in. because of the low angle we gusseted them from the top with the same tubing and smoothed it all out a little. all told each mount is made from 5 different pieces of steel.

(jay - that alternator adjuster you showed in your engine mount pic has got to be one of the coolest bracket/mount pieces on the entire hamb. i've got the post saved where you showed that the first time)
