On a low-tech 283, pre-PCV, what would cause engine oil to drip from road draft tube?

If I start it cold and let it sit and idle, it does not drip. If I drive it around, running it up to 2500 RPM, and then stop and idle, it drips quite a lot.:(

    Ideas

There is supposed to be a oil separator under the manifold. It is about the size of a tomato juice can. If it is not in place, it will do just what you describe.

Is the can under the intake that the road draft tube hooks into?

May just be excessive blow by. How many miles on it and has the engine sit for long periods of time? Rings may be stuck or just wore out.
