I myself tape off the snout and stuff the hole with news paper.

Never had a problem with the rubber getting paint on it, but I always mask off the shaft.

  3. Don't get paint on the machined surfaces where the seal rides, or the "fit" area where it fit to crank. Ran in to that once on a friend's SBC, took all afternoon, and all sorts of techniques to get balancer off of the crank, all due to some overspray on it.

Okay cool, thanks. Last question, I painted the manifolds also yesterday with VHT paint. At what point do you guys bake them to cure? As soon as the paint dries, or just prior to installing? And how long/what temp do you usually cook them at?

Are those little dings in the balancer timing marks?

At first I thought this was a new replacement. Just now I noticed this. IMG_4952.jpeg
Time to replace or have it rebuilt.

Is that chunk of missing rubber a problem? It came back from the builder that way, I****umed they reconditioned it or whatever.

They bead blasted it is all. It may only be surface cracking but… Keep in mind. The outer ring also serves as the drive pulley. They are none to slip with age because of that.
