    how much cam can I put in my sbc 283 and still be streetable.

    Depends on if you're running a stick or automatic trans. Knowing that would be a good start on the question

    Compression, cam type would be two big factors. I.E. Pump gas. Dont expect 1000hp.

    If you are just looking for the sould of a wild cam. Go with the Thumper cam from Comp Cams. Nice sound and very streetable.

    It also depends on how old you are. I used stuff 40 years ago that I wouldn't even think of today. Think I've reached the "Grumpy Old Man" stage.
     
  7. Small Chevy's respond well to solid lifter cams and stick shift tranny's. If not you might as well leave the 2barrel on it!

    Street? Street-strip? Strip? Cruiser?
    Compression ratio?
    Manual or auto?
    Intake? Headers? Other engine mods?
    Rear gear ratio?
