I am replacing the distributor in my '56 'vette. Have not timed it yet but it seems too far advanced (tooth off?). Anyway when I turned engine off with ignition switch, it kept on running. Tried again with another ignition switch and same result. Any ideas?
Will have to install diode in power wire so it won’t back feed, should be in the instructions, was in mine
What wires did you move or change around except the wire between the coil and the distributor? If you lifted one distributor out and installed a new but very similar distributor there should be no issue. If you added something in the system that is probably where the issue such as maybe an MSD box as MCJim asked. Alternator feedback is one of the normal "can't get it to shut off" things. Meaning that the alternator is supplying power to the ign side of the switch because you don't have an idiot light or diode after the key is shut off. That shouldn't be the case here unless you also installed an alternator. Go back to the What did I have unhooked and what did I add and you will find the source of the problem.
on the starter sol there are two termanles one for ign start switch .the other is ign, by pass..remove the by pass wire. .put a test light on the term .crank the eng when you turn the key off the light should go out. if it don,t the sol is at fault. it will be a faint light
^^^^ fix this first…… I am the least knowledgeable on here regarding this type of stuff, but I was always told that too advanced would contribute to run on/dieseling. Quote from a googled source: - may be incorrect - may be some help…… The fuel/air mixture could be heated to the point that it self-ignites, causing the diesel run-on effect. 4) Timing is out. The timing itself won't cause the run on as the ignition is switched off when the run in occurs. However timing too far advanced can cause an overheating engine which can attribute to over-run.
