I disagree with your statement about mechanical rpm. First, you have intial timing. This should be as much as the engine combo can take without starter kickback. This can be 12 to 24 degrees without manifold or ported vacuum advance. Then you customize the mechanical advance to come in at the best rate using springs and if necessary limiting the mechanical to the highest total prior to pinging. Reading the spark plugs can help tell you if the timing is optimal. This is more than enough to run a street engine. An engine does not need to have more timing although when you add vacuum advance it is more efficient at cruise.

  2. LOL I am so glad I never met any of you 50 years ago. I have been full mechanical since I was in high school. I actually drive my cars, as in everyday every place I want to go.

My current ride is a 355 making 400+ and has consistantly made 20+ MPG for over 20 years. Forget everything you have learned about ignition on the web and try talking with someone who has actually put it to practice.

    No offense intended.

If your Brawler series carb has a choke, it's not a race version. All the race versions have the chokes removed, and no way to have a choke on them.
Have you pulled the air bleeds yet to see what size they are?
