engine swap advice please

    i have a 1960 bel air with a 235 cast iron automatic transmission i can get a 1969 250 with a 2 spd powerglide trans. what will a person have to do to install the engine i have searched all over and found nothing on it is the drive shaft and engine mounts the same.the reason i'm wanting to swap them out is the 235 is very tired and rebuilding it right now is not in the budget the 250 i thought will be a cheaper way to go plus that way i can be driving it sooner than rebuilding the 235 will the 250 even bolt right up to the old trans thanks for any info

    Generically speaking, this shouldn't be too big a swap.

    It shouldn't be too complicated a swap. The motor mounts are similar but will need some 'tweaking' to make them work, same for the transmision mount. I expect the driveshaft yoke is the same size/spline but the length may be different, possibly requiring l a longer or shorter front driveshaft section. The rest, wiring, radiator hoses etc should be pretty simple to accomplish.

    You mention the possibility of the new engine fitting the old cast iron powerglide. Theoretically, it may bolt up by using the Chev V8 factory "adapter" plate common to '55/'62 V8 with iron powerglides since the 250 block is configured like the V8's.

    However, even if that is feasible, there is no good reason I can think of to do it. As Powerglides go, the later aluminum case unit is much lighter and more efficient than the iron. As plentiful and inexpensive as T350 turbo hydramatics are, you could use one of those for a performance improvement. That said, again, the aluminum PG should work fine for your purposes.

    I believe the PGs are the same length, if you have the new one around, get out the tape measure and go to town. If you don't need the car for a DD, yank out the old combination and line it up next to the new one. I don't think you're going to have a bad time with it.

    hey thanks for all the advice when i measured the engine mounts from the back of the block to the center of the mounts it seems to be a 1/2 inch difference no big deal my son thought he had rerad somewhere that people used old jeep engine mounts?? i'm really looking forward to brining this beast back to life.
