I'm building up a 1979 Chevy 250 inline and I was wondering whats a good "Auto" tranny that would bolt up to it other than a powerglide?

  2. 700r4 would get you the super-low first gear to compensate for the diminished low-cube power.

  3. Turbo 350.
    200R4, 700R4.

Of the three I would prefer the 350 turbo, but if I had to run an OD the 200r would be my tranny of choice behind a 6, lower first gear.

pretty much any Chevy transmission used from the 1950s-1990s will bolt up.

You can find many "trannys" in the Hollywood area...

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

    if its a heavy car a 200 r4 , a lighter one a th350 and a stiffer rear gear .

I prefer the 350 as all it needs is the kick down cable and a vacuum hose , no TP cable needed which seems to screw things up .

I agree a TH350 would be the lightest, simplest and with the correct rear axle ratio, more than adequate.

However, if you decide you want an OD automatic, I favor the 2oo4R over the 700R4. The 2004R is
smaller case size, lighter weight and more importantly, consumes less horsepower due to less internal friction. It is the more efficient of the two, especially for a smaller displacement engine like your 250 six cylinder.

Turbo 350 is real reliable..... I have a couple of cores laying around the shop if you need one.
