so, the car i have, a 56 customline, came with a swapped 312 from a thunderbird in it, and the guy, who is a close friend, also gave me the original 292 that it came with from the factory. i have no intentions on ever putting it back into the car to make it "original" and pretty much considering selling it. ive looked online trying to get a rough idea of its worth, so i thought id ask here. still has the original oil air cleaner and gl*** fuel filter, otherwise nothing really. it needs a complete rebuild and all that too. any ideas?
Wow... a little ways away... I am in Winchester, Virginia. Depending on the shape of your Y block and whether or not you have any good parts bolted to it (sometimes if you are looking to get your money out of it, parting it out is the way to go). If you have the numbers on the block and on the heads, that would help too.
You would be better off taking the engine apart , cleaning the parts , paint them and sell them . You will make more money that way than trying to sell a NON Running engine . Now if the engine runs and you can start it for a buyer , you should be able to get $300 to $500 for a running 292 . I have gotten that much before with a complete engine with the heads pulled to check the cylinders out . Also you might want to consider keeping the block since 312's tend to have problems of cracking at the mains . The 292 will work for a donor block . The only difference is the crank mains will have to be turned down to fit into the 292 . That is done allot since GOOD 312 blocks are hard to find . Just a thought . Jim
hmmm, thanks jim. you bring up some good points i didnt consider lol. maybe i better hold on to it a bit longer thanks
What heads does the 292 have ? They might be a good candidates for a better rebuild and flow for your 312 . Actually the block , oil pan and timing cover is about all you can use if your 312 block has any problems . They rest you could sell for money to rebuild the 312 or put toward something else like a nice Blue Thunder intake . Those are really nice intakes too ! Jim
