Ive really been thinking about making an English Wheel...... Anyone have any ideas, links.. whatever?!.. Thanks.
Check out the alblums on < www.Metalshapers.org > Included, you will find alblums for the two English Wheels I've built. Then join the Metalshapers discussion board< http://groups.yahoo.com/group/metalshapers >, and check out the archives.
Fab32 has a neat little one he built for less than $20. i believe Enjinjoe designed it. i used it a little bit screwing around at Frank's place and it is neat. that'd be the first one to build and would work great for smaller patch panels, and you can't beat the price. you should see all the miniature 32 Ford parts Frank made with his ... anyway, do that and see how much you like using it (i bet you'll like it) then you can do a larger one latter on. i have a neat idea for a giant floor model i'd like to build someday but it will be quite detailed (kinda of a usable sculpture really) and take ALOT of time and steel to build. here is a pic of a neat one i saved a while back...
one of em was something like a Ford 9" axle bearing or somethin?? let see if i have a pic of the little monster. i figure Enjinjoe or Fab32 will see this and post some info for our newbie friend nope, no pic that i can find. come on Frank, i know you got a pic, and the details we need to build it.
Danny, Just go on the Rodders Roundtable website and you will find a build sequence posted. It gives you the build procedure and a list of parts. To give you a hint the main wheel is a 9" Ford rearend axle bearing and the anvil (shaping wheel) is a bearing that I got from Tractor Supply. I believe it was an insert bearing for a pillow block. The website will give you everything you need to do the job. I've got to learn how to post pictures. I could show you how I changed the basic plans to create what I feel is a more ridgid frame. Not really necessary but I can't seem to leave anything alone. Frank
GOT ONE!! damn i love the "SEARCH" function ... here is a pic of one FEDER built, not the same one FAB32 built but Fab mentiones the fact he is building one in this post (it's about a year old)... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=96533&Forum=UBB1&Words=english%20wheel&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=1year&Main=96470&Search=true#Post96533 hope that gets you there, i don't know how to do the cute little link without posting the entire address. anyway, here is a pic of FEDER's wheel....

I bought a kit and built it. Came out pretty nice. So far I can make oddly shaped thingys of an asymetrical nature.
A home made english wheel is pretty simple once you get the materials together. I am making one as soon as I get my garage back from my inlaws. The y are using it as storage while they build a house. The great thing about the english wheel is that you don't need something that has tons of pressure, save that for your planishing hammer. You just need a good wheel on top. A large bearing or even a steel caster if thats easy for you to get. And a way to adjust the pressure easily from the bottom.
[ QUOTE ] one of em was something like a Ford 9" axle bearing or somethin?? [/ QUOTE ] Here's a link for the one Kustombuilder is talkin about. $20 English Wheel Hope this helps. I'm gonna build this as soon as I get my welder up and runnin. (It'll make fabbin' the cab corners so much easier) Eric ----------------------------------------------------------- 49 Studebaker P/U
I'm currently stealing, er, collecting the parts to build a small one. 4" diameter roller bearing for the top wheel and a 3" self aligning bearing inner part for the bottom roundy bit. I'm using an old gate valve handle for my adjustment, with a piece of 1" threaded stock to run it up and down. When I get home from my ship I'll knock up a tubular frame. All this is covered in some of the above links. Should make a nice little tool to play around with and learn another skill, hopefully.
