Well, the HAMB drags are over and done with for the year. I had a good time, you had a good time, we all had a good time. Now it is time to get back to work on our junk. Now everyone is talking about next year, use that motivation to get something ACCOMPLISHED, now! Here are a few pics of what I worked on last week before the drags. Right now the weather in IL is PERFECT for working in the garage at night. Nice and cool. So my welder has been fired up now for over a week, except for my little trip to the holyland. Anyone that saw me over the weekend could probably tell who I was by how much my face was peeling from my Tack-a-thon last week. No it wasn't a skin condition, so choprods it was OK to make out with me, I am not contagious! Anyway, there was some stainless trim that ran down the length of the Olds quarter. Since I cut a COCKpit out of the decklid area I needed to shorten the trim and thus change the stamped in body line that the trim attaches to. So first I cut the trim down to the proper length. That was easy, it was stainless, so I just wrapped some tape around it and lopped it off and polished the ends up a bit. I put the trim on the body line and cut everything off around it until it fir down on there and I marked the "point" on the end where it was going to end.
I made a cardboard template of the little filler piece I needed to fill in where the body line was removed to the COCKpit. I trimmed out a chunk and stuck it in there with my handy dandy harbor freight panel clamps. I needed to fill in the center of the point with something I could grind a shape into so I took some 3/8 rod scrap that I had and welded it in there and trimmed the sides to fit.
A little more grinding and a little more welding and here is what the finished product looks like. I still need to grind down the welds on the flat part but I was running low on ROLOC's so I will save that for another day. The whole ordeal took about 2 hours. Then I repeated on the other side. See, this shit is EASY! The Pileup is only a month off and I am going to try and have this thing there and presentable (probably not running yet) so I will be doing more updates for those that are interested.
all that work for nuthin!! around here i just buy my quarter panels by the gallon......that looks fuckin awesome.. ivehad this car for 20 years maybe ill cut it up for a roadster its a 58 olds
how's about let's see some full shots of the Lander. me and randy were just talking about it yesterday. it already looks cool from the old pics i saw.
John, we aren't allowed to show pictures of our units on here. Ask that Lasky character. I thought I had one of the whole trim piece, maybe tonight. Here are a couple of others.
OK So we're not holding hands or slapping asses? Oh common groupe hug. If it makes you feel any better Mrs. Beaner called to ask about my ETs so I shuffled my feet a little, looked at the ground and fessed up. She said that's OK for a Push Truck and hung up. I came home to her cleaning out my cubby hole/garage and this monster lecture about makeing room to move the roadster in cause it ain't gonna get built in the back yard. I'm way ahead of you on the getting ready for Meca thing buddy. Well at least I'm catching up a little.
plowboy - I here ya - that thing looks killer - I've got a quick question for the enlightened one, I have done the metal work on my firewall, recessed it, filled holes, ground it smooth, etc. Then the other night I sprayed the firewall in spray bomb primer to see what I had. I can see where I need to bondo now, question is - do I have to take it back to bare metal with the wire brush - then put on the bondo or filler? Or can I just put the filler on over the primer coat and sand to my liking? Reprimer/repeat I guess what I am asking is if the filler designed to stick to the metal only or will it work over the primer? What kind of filler bondo do you like? Davencek mentioned something like all metal?
I would not stick putty to primer. I have seen my buddy use a little putty to fill in some very tiny spots over primer but not very big. I think bondo is meant to stick to metal only. I guess the answer is "it depends" Remember, I am no expert, I have only built 1 car! Ha Ha Ha. Maybe one of the more skilled mud slingers will chime in. Roadstar and I were talking the other night about bondo work. If you want something to look really nice, just skim coat everything and block sand it down with 80 and use some high build primer to fill in the scratch marks. Then it will all look spiffy.
Actually if you mud it more than an 1/8" thick you're whistlin' in the wind. That's what a hammer and dolly are for. I use whatever is cheapest as a rule, or Dupont whichever comes first. If I need something more than just to cover up a rough weld or hammer marks I use Kitty Hair.
plowboy it should be illegal for you to post pics of that thing, it gives me way to many ideas. (could i put 57 chevy quarter panels on my 35 ?) i love it, its looking great.
I burned the old face off on Sunday. I even peeled on my eye lids. If I am lucky the new face will look better than the old when it grows back! I should be able to finish the wheel wells and get them tacked in tonight. If I get the rest of the floor in over the weekend are you up to helping set the roof in finally?
Plow- O.K. No more hand holding and butt slapping - but how about ass-kissing? I just had to jump on here and comment about the surprisingly high quality of fit and finish on your little blue truck. The HAMB drags were my first chance to see it "in person", and I was more than a little impressed with your work. It's really something special. I thought everyone was flipping over your stuff because of the bold concepts (and rightfully so), but your ability with metal - and attention to detail really set your stuff apart. I'm really looking forward to seeing your new project. Thanks for being there with your truck. I had hoped to meet you, but maybe next year.
Plow, That looks awesome...are you gas welding it together or using a mig? It looks so straight in the picts. I like it.
i also got my first shot at seein the "Unit" at the Drags... i told the man the same thing... AWESOME work... "its mostly bondo" was his reply No shit, all in all dood you are the man,,, Gay Rod or not now if you'll excuse me, i got a field fresh set of quarter panels from Rocky sittin out in the garage i need to size up and figure out how to attach to the RiverRat
My shit ain't as straight as I would like it, but I suppose that if it is good enough for Fay Butler it oughtta be good enough for me. Ha Ha Ha I use a mig to weld it up, SLOWLY so it doesn't warp and I planish the welds a bit to stretch them back out. I actually don't own any photochop software. Ha Ha Ha I suppose after seeing a lot of other REALLY shitty bodywork mine ain't so bad. I thought Ryan's comment was funny "I was really expecting to see some shoddy bodywork dude, that thing is straight" If I play it down so everybody's expectations are lower, so I can get away with more that way. Ha Ha ha
I don't think he welds them at all. I think it is JB weld with bondo over it! Maybe some High tensile epoxy for the frame work though!
If you don't hurry up, you're going to miss the Enuff Z Nuff World Tour. In Rockford this weekend... Looks bitchin.
Damn dude thats cool as hell. Great proportions. Olson ----------- "I wonder how cavalier your attitude'll be if a pig is gnawing through your vitals."
This car doesn't suck that's for sure!!! I really hope to see it at the Pileup, but not getting to hang out with Aaron because everyone is drooling over him/his work will suck!!! Ha! Ha! Ha!
I knew I had missed the secret to free forming a car somewhere! That explains all the empty cardboard rolls around the shop! You tricky bastard!
That looks great nice work once agian. Sorry about your headlite from the road gator. Can't wait to see it on the road.Bs
