Projects Enough monkeying around: let's build a 5w, or another 4dr bites the big one.

Door width is the same, 4dr doors are a bit taller in the window than the coupe doors, the rear quarter window radii are the same/extremely close, just a larger dimensions all around so they will be identical to the coupe ones once the smoke clears... the panel between the rear window and decklid is completely different and will need mucho cutting/welding/grinding to work... probably the BIGGEST obstacle is the rear roof has WAY more crown than the coupe roof.... lots of "adjustment" to take place there. I'm not too worried about height/crown right now, I'll tackle that when chop time comes... just cut until it flows and looks right. Was really hoping to be able to use the coupe rear roof... Oh well, it'll make for a better story when it's all done, right?

Could always save yourself some trouble and leave the quarters off like ScootieMcRad's Murray. However the roof seems like more work then the quarters. Geesh, what the hell happened there!!!!

Very exciting to see it as a coupe. It's only a matter of time before you've got it permanently assembled and you're down to slapper and dolly work. As usual keep us in the loop.

Or you could make an oddball coupe body sort of like Bob Bleed's '32/'29 roadster. That would be rad!

Thunderbird-The build's coming along nicely. You work fast. Sounds like your intentions are to make it proportionally identical to a stock coupe (excluding the chop). That's going to be a challenge but I have no doubt in your abilities.

Yea, something crushed it pretty bad at some point, it was fixed in typical 70's/80's late-model body shop fashion... pound it out with a BFH, sculpt with plastic until it looks close. I already straightened it out quite a bit, but my camera battery died before I could snap a pic. The driprail area that's really dingered there will have to be cut out and replaced... luckily I have a bunch of extra driprail to use.:D

TS, yea it should be indistinguishable from a true 5w once I'm done. The heavy chop will help out a lot in the roof dept, I spent about 2 hrs today literally studying the differences between the 4dr and 5w pieces and taking/comparing measurements... there are a LOT of changes to be made here!

Well, hopefully if enough of the coupe roof is there, I'd say it's still great to have it, just to be able to pull dimensions and proportion details from.

    Sure beats guessing from pics.

Yea, it's good enough for that, not much else, Once I'm done with it, I'm gonna turn the driver's side quarter into a garage art project:cool:

This may look just like my last update (minus the snow) but this is the shortened sedan roof. You can see the larger crown across the rear of the roof compared to the coupe, man, between that and the extra height it makes this thing look like a legend car! I can't wait to get the body together just so I can chop it, hahaha! I'm really surprised how low the rear sits... I thought I'd be monkeying with it to get the rear lower. I think I'm gonna have to put a few leaves back in the rear spring and reverse the front eyes to bring the nose down and even things out a little.

Second look...I doubt you can flatten/recurve what is there?? I keep thinking donor curves for both sides, then fill in the center with light crown filler from a modern roof. VW old bug fender curves for the outers?? Hey just thinking :)

edit; thinking the center piece above the window and going up to the fabric opening; how about a 50's trunklid? I'd bet you could find something close if you had some templates from a stock coupe.

  20. Sweet! Man that deck lid is a big piece of the puzzle. Starting to look like a coupe!

    Thanks doods!

Yea, I'm still brewing up some ideas there... I have some pretty junky '34 fenders that came with the car, the edges are toasted but the curved areas are still reasonably nice, I'll have to investigate them further once the time comes. If worse comes to worst, I'll beat/wheel a few panels out to match what's left of the coupe top.

I didn't know that you had a English wheel. Cool.

I was talking today with a 33 5w guy today, and neither of us could recall any donor 33/34 coupe tin ever being availble around here for many decades. There are quite a few survivor 33/34 old time coupe rods here, but not pieces, for some reason.

I don't... yet.:D But I've used one a handful of times with good results... never made anything quite as complex as these would be, but I'm persistant and there's a first time for everything. That said, the most likely result will be that I find a donor something or other to meld in there.

  25. You can do it, I made all of this new stuff for my rotted roof & that includes most of the rear window lip. Look thru the window and you can see the pass side was even worse and bigger patches. And this door piece along with new the top for the door. hardest part was actually believing I could do it and just getting started thinking how to do it. After that it was a challenge, scrapped some metal, but its done.
