  1. Your car reminds me of the blue body I have slowly been patching back together. It will require some "english wheel in a can" some day

DAMN! I look away for a couple of weeks and... DAMN! I wish I could work half that fast. This is easily some of the best proportions I have ever seen thrown at a five window, too.

I have a old 34 5 window stock car that I have been collecting chucks for to put it back together. Your work inspires me. That is one nice little coupe.

haha, English Wheel in a Can! Yea, I'll be using a bit of that on this car I think.

Got my radiator fit up today, early mustang unit mounted inside the original rad framework with the top tank still intact. It's got a crazy old homemade filler neck sticking out of it, I'm just gonna put a cap on it for kicks haha!

Also made a generator mount and did a bunch of other little crap to get the engine ready to fire... sheesh, it never ceases to amaze me how much time all this piddly crap takes...

I've still been spending a hour or two a day welding, crazy how solid the body is becoming after each session, it's actually pretty rigid... strange... I was so used to it being a floppy mess.

Suprised to see the engine setback. I guess the Y blocks have a long front cover and whatnot.

Yea, they are long engines Frank. And 33-34 fords have a notoriously small engine bay, a flathead barely fits, haha! I am using the stock 34 trans mount and I only slid it back about an inch or so... just the nature of the beast when using one of these engines in a '34 chassis I guess. I've got plenty of fan clearance up front, could probably use a 1/2" spacer, but the crank pulley is RIGHT up next to the front crossmember. I wanted to keep the engine low in the chassis so this seemed like the best compromise.

And... there's going to be some screwy shit goin on with this lower radiator hose. gotta make a curvy steel tube to sneak between the mechanical fan and the front crossmember, around the front engine mount to the water pump. If I can manage to get that taken care of, I should be listening to this thing bark tmw! woohoo!

Fire up, that's worth waking up for in the AM...:D

    Now I got it.

Hey, what's the story on using a 35/36 "truck" firewall in some other ford year model, to get setback room? Is it for 33/34 cars? or 35/36 cars? No, I'm not planning, I just forgot..:)

Yea that's a trick for these model 40's and I believe 35-36 cars as well. Pretty sure my club brother Kev has one in his 36 3w. Mark Phelan is using one in his yblock powered 34 3w. I think he said Pete used one on his green tack-nosed coupe too. I had a fellow hamber from out toward your way offer me one for this car, but shipping woulda killed me and I don't mind having a little "engine cove" in my hot rod. I kinda like them if they're owner-built and neatly done, ya know?

Hahahaha, I was almost gonna say I hate those things... but:rolleyes: momma always said "if you don't have anything nice to say..." still working on that one, mom. Bitchin' firewalls...yea, you probably saw what happened to the one that was in my last A roadster body when I got it! Dropped it like it was HOT.

Thanks man, will do (I hope!)

  16. Do you have a picture of your firewall without the motor in there? I just cut mine this week and am working on it right now. Always can use some ideas when doing this stuff.

yup, i have a 35 truck firewall going in to mine. i am making patterns from the original now to transfer to the truck one to make the right cuts...

they say that not much needs to be done to make them fit, bing bam zoom, and voila it's in there. i think that is some revisionist history by hot rodders who would rather forget what they had to go through to make it work. there is plenty that needs to be done.

i should have some progress on my thread in a week or so.

Hey Dale, nothing yet, I put it together with the engine in there to make sure there would be no conflicts of interest... It's made out of four basic pieces, two side panels with about 30* of angle on them, one large flat rectangular center panel, and a trapezoidal top piece all stitched together. The engine should be out again next week sometime, but if you're working on it now that probably won't help much.

Yea Mark I was thinking about using a pickup firewall, but honestly the benefit didn't seem to outweigh the cost for me. As you know, removing one of these firewalls is not a quick and easy job by any stretch of the imagination.

I will be watching for that truck firewall swap. I don't have any future need to know, but I still really do want to know how it is done.

Maybe by tonight Andy will have "the B'ville" coupe running

andy, i decided to do it because i got the firewall for free from Slick Willy, and i couldn't bring myself cut up the one in the car. it's absolutely perfect, so i figured someone else car put it to good use when i am done with it.

and no, the removal was anything but quick and easy.

giggity... man this thing sounds healthy. 60 lbs oil pressure...

no leaks, except for my poor connection of the oil pressure gauge... it popped off and squirted about a quart on the driver's side manifold while revving it up... DOH! I promptly shut 'er down and mopped it up.

Haha, first drive will be a bit yet... gotta finish up the floor/metalwork, then the body is coming off to clean and paint the chassis and smooth out the body a bit. Another month or so?
