ePay ubberpricing strikes again "Hurst Shifter"

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by InDaShop, Feb 6, 2006.

  1. Damn and I bought my Hurst from them, for my 53 Merc 3sp/OD for $75 buck.

  2. I don't think you know what proper punctuation, grammar, spelling, and syntax are either.

Your opinions might be taken more seriously if you were to type as if you had some modicum of education. Perhaps you should use some of your ebay income to take a remedial English course.

Well!!!!!!........ I have one of those "mystery" shifters in my Lo1. I can take pics for ya. If you want to copy I may even send it to ya and you can send it back to me after analization.

Thats what we are all here for aren't we?

I can't let go of mine cause some day I may be able to drive my hot rod but for now it just sits there. Oh and I can't find the handle for mine. Steve

A NOS Hurst Shifter for a Cad/LaSalle sideshift tranny, to put the shifter through the floor.
$565 later, which was about $365 more than I was willing to spend. I never even bid, it was already too far gone.
For the most part it was two guys seeing who's eWeenie is bigger.

The bidder Heathen1960 has ruined so many freaking Caddy flathead auctions for me. Its not even that I was willing to payup for something cause I so dearly needed it, but that I believe this dude just doesn't like to lose. No matter the game or auction.

    Anywho, RANT OFF.
Just venting cause I guess I have less money and more brains. I am extremely happy for the seller. Dude is going to be hop skipping to the bank!!!![/QUOTE]

  4. I've bought, but never sold on e-bay. I sell here and have had fair success.

I think e-bay is good for both buyer and seller. Ya' know what your willing to pay, and if ya' don't "step-up" far enough, so be it. That item isn't the only one ever made. Some of you folks talk like some of this stuff is the HOPE DIAMOND. Be patient, wait and see, another will show up at an affordable price.

As far as prices. Most of this vintage stuff can be considered a bargin in todays $dollars$. I just went and looked at some old HURST shifter pricing off a price sheet dated April 1976. A Competion Plus 4-speed shifter you'd use on a Muncie in a '55-'57 Chevy listed for $99.23. Jobber price was $71.44. So ya' could probably buy it all day long for $85.

Same shifter today through Sumitt is $299.95. So, let's do a quick comparison. Back then I made $8k per year. If I was still working, today I'd probably be at about $50-60k. So, 7 x $8k =s $54K. Given that, the $85 shifter should cost: 7 x $85 =s $595 or more.

Where I'm going with this is to say the price we're paying for stuff that's still made today, is a bargin compared to 30-40 years ago. The stuff that's obsolete and discontinued should command even higher prices, to speak nothing about supply and demand, which is increasing everyday.

So this entire thread should really be a non-issue. If ya' can't afford to "Step-Up", quit your complaining and take up another hobby. Maybe ya' should try golf. Do that and show me what ya' have to show for it at the end of 30 years ;) .

Yes, it was none of my business, but thanks for filling me in as to your projects. You sure have a lot of stuff going on. Your ebay ID and a few others are ones I used the advanced search to see what you and they are bidding on, and I can then click on the auctions and see what the sellers are also selling, so you save me a lot of time searching for stuff as a number of times you have lead me to someone listing a lot of cool stuff that I probably would not have found. And yes, I see you get beat out in bidding on a regular basis (hell, dspite what people here seem to think I have seen George Poteet (cameltoe on ebay), not win every auction he bids on, so he even has limits as to how high he will bid, as I guess we all do.
I generally only bid in the last seconds and if the price gets over my "set limit" I do not jump into the bidding. I buy at swap meets too and through a network of friends. Every once in a while I do get a "deal" on ebay, but its not that often anymore. I consign collectible items to local auctions and attend 3 to 4 live auctions a week and sell on ebay, so I know a lot about auctions. Good luck on ebay in the future and good luck with your projects.

PS: For those lamenting the high prices on ebay these days, here's an ebay hot rod related auction that ended recently at a rather high price:

    Lets level this.

Yes I was ranting/complaining/bitching/moaning WTF ever else you want to call it. Now was I pissed off? Or have I ever been pissed off about losing an auction, or not bidding on an auction cause it took off? NO
Only time eBay has pissed me off is when my computer/service provider, etc has locked up or is moving at the speed of reverse and caused me to miss a bid. I'm sure many share this pain.

As for BigJim's reply (above), I couldn't have said it better on all accounts.
I always know how much I am willing to spend and don't get caught up in the "Run on The Bank" auctions.

Heathen, wow is all I can say. I was with you for quite a while through your reply. I even thought it was extremely cool of you to be considering repopping these and using this one for a pattern. Yes I did say you've ruined auctions for me. Has it frustrated me, yes. Pissed off, No. Its obvious you play with a larger piggy bank than me. I can appreciate and respect that. As far as "Maybe we can work something out in the future" I did and do mean that. No reason for two numbskulls to continue to run it up on each other. Pretty sure it'd be cheaper to collude. Don't think the Feds have regulated that yet. We can cross that bridge when we get to it. If we can't work it out off the field, we'll battle it out in the trenches.

Somewhere I have a HAMB thread about how to sell on ebay that I printed off about 5 years ago (before everybody and their dog was doing it). The originator of the thread was asking others to school him on how to get top dollar when selling vintage rod parts on ebay. Maybe some of you remember that thread.

The thing that really soured me about that thread (and ebay) was when one or more of our good HAMB brethren (none on this current thread) jumped on the thread and started bragging about how they always got top dollar by bidding up their own auctions ---
either by being registered under different names on ebay or by having friends to do the schil bidding.

I couldn't believe what I was reading! One would have to be a real dork to proudly tell thousands of other Hambers that he was doing that. I wonder if anyone reading that thread took the lesson to heart though. Maybe that's part of the reason for the uber-pricing on ebay???
