What is a good general purpose epoxy primer to spray over Ospho rust converter? Just for a base to keep rust from coming back.
I used to use DP, but it's kinda pricey. Now I use the Shopline brand, half the price, seems like the same stuff, get it from a PPG dealer. Rich
HOK epoxy primer is not compatible with the ospho type rust converter coatings, you will have lifting issues, believe me. Check with the manufacturer of your EP to be sure. PPG works, as well as others, but HOK does not....
Be careful using ANY epoxy primer over ANY rust converter. Many epoxies will react with the acid and remain soft and never fully cure. Whatever primer you use, make sure to talk to a tech guy that actually knows what he is talking about and make sure you tell him what you're using it over. One thing I can say is that HOK epoxy is compatible over Picklex 20. But thats as far as I go. Good luck!
Years ago I used DP over rust mort, but we always tried to wirebrush or sand off all we could before applying the primer. That left the rust converter at a minimum and mostly in the inaccessible areas. Never noted any curing issues.
Ill second Bills comment on HOK epoxy primer. I only use HOK KP2 CF epoxy primer and after gettin down to bare metal if not priming right away i always scrub the metal with phosphoric acid& distilled water mixed50/50.You MUST remove this residue by scrubbing with wax& grease remover before priming. ASK me how i khow!
