I'm looking at 51 Chevy and would like some input on the value of the car. The asking price is $800.00 as is, not for sure if it runs it was pulled out of a field after sitting for a few years. I have attached a few pictures if someone more knowledgeable than me could post some comments. I have a few more pictures if needed. Thanks.

$800 seems OK if it has matching paperwork.

Looks pretty solid. $800 is about right. See if they'll take $600 then meet in the middle.

Sorry I didn’t introduce myself earlier, been hanging around the boards for about a year. I have been looking for a 53 as a project when a friend approached me with this one to sale. I appreciate all the replies so far and I think you are right that it is a 51. I really wanted to get some opinions on how bad of shape the body was in, didn’t want to take on to much for the price of the car. As far as OldSkool just love these rides. Thanks again for all of your feedback.

it's pretty hard to see how bad the body is until you get in there and pull out the sill covers, what's left of the floor mat/carpet, etc and get a good look at the floor and insides of the rocker panels, quarters, etc. Usually there are a lot of rust holes hiding away....although in general the car doesn't look too bad, the only obvious rust thru on the outside is the bottom of the trunk.

My guess is the guys from up north would consider it a no-rust cherry car, although us southwest folks see it as needing a lot of work.

$800 with ***le would be reasonable.

I'll throw in my two cents worth, You would be a lot better off spending a little more and buying something a little better , running and without all the rust, I see a project that will cost a small fortune and never be finished. You will most likely regret buying one like this that needs so much work. I have been there several times and took a while to learn to step back from some deals , Sorry ,my opinion,,,,Walrus

As bumpstick mentioned, $600 sounds better to me. I agree that it is a 50, not 51. I just sold a 52 sedan to a fellow HAMBer for $900 that was somewhat nicer than that one. It just has to be worth it to you.

Walrus, I believe you are telling me what I already knew it is just easier to accept from someone else. I have noticed one in the local paper for $2500 no rust, may be worth investing more initially.

Only because it's a fastback would I consider $800 a good deal. I got two cars for $800 and they looked to be in better shape then that rats nest. All that insulation that is a nest now looks to have really rusted out the rear trunk pan, which is bad, cause if that is gone, then probably alot more is gone as well. Does it roll? It's a safe bet ALL the mechanicals will be shot-I'd go $500 with them delivering it, your looking at a lot of work there, ask me how I know....

You can't expect anyone to sell it too much cheaper, considering the value of s**** iron and the going prices of the parts on it. It does look like it's gonna need quite a bit of repairs. I'd say it's worth the money if you are prepared to do the work. It is a fastback, after all.

I agree with Walrus, way to rusty to ever get finished. Spend twice as much and start with something way better that you have a chance of finishing and enjoying. Brian

I know I'm going to be in the minority here but I think you need to be realistic with regard to your skills and finances. There are guys on this board who are simply amazing craftsmen and they would not bat an eye of fear to take your prroject on. I'm nowhere near their level of proficiency so I instead look for cars that are solid runners that I can enjoy while making improvements, upgrades, and repairs.

If you think you're up for the challenge and you like the car that much... then I wish you good luck. If not, I'd say look for a solid driver from which to start your project.

  15. I think these guys are right, if it was a rare car, sure, but early 50s Chevies in better shape seem to be falling out of trees lately. Fastbacks, maybe not...

Yep. If that car was sitting around here I would consider it pretty solid. Other places, not so.

    Someone needs to save it.

I agree with wvenfield, it needs to be saved before it looks like this one.
