Hey guys! I just got these evans heads in and I see that there is water corrosion around some of the water ports. IS this an issues that needs to be addressed or will the gasket seal the ports so there is no leakadge. Overall the heads are in excellent condition and all the threads are perfect, just some corrosion. Also, why are some heads very thick like these Evans and like my Edmunds, they are about half as thick. What does the 281 stamped on the head mean?? Some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks HAMB!
Don't know about the 281. I would repair the heads, as they look border line to me. Might try Dev-Con to build up, then plane them just enough to be flat.
Hi Mike, I have two sets of Evans heads with the same corrosion problem. The number on my heads are 250, not sure what that means. I ran my first set back in the late '70's on my 3 7/16 X 4 1/8 59A in my 40 coupe. I ended up getting coolant in the cylinders, I even replaced the head gaskets on a regular basis and retorqued and still had the same problem. I ended up replacing the heads with new Edelbrock heads, but I would rather use the Evans heads since I am running an Evans 3 carb manifold. I am still running the same engine with a Winfield camshaft and Harmom and Collins mag. Crestline has a good suggestion and I am curious if any one has tried that repair.
Had the same problem on a set of Edmunds heads, only worse. Had local fab shop build up the area with weld, than had them machined smooth, and than had to have them re-domed...cost a bunch of money...but saved a hard to find set of heads!
The current owner of Evans is here on the HAMB as EVANS SPEED EQUIPMENT. Give Jimmy a call about the number stamped on them. As far as corrosion, literally every aluminum head that was used for any period of time will show corrosion. They should be welded up and surfaced. As for the thickness of the casting, I believe Earl Evans was adding more material to prevent warping.
