Evapo-Rust on Suspension Components?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by gwhite, Jun 24, 2013.

  1. Curious if it is safe to use Evapo-Rust on spindles, tie rods, shackles, &c. I've got a couple sets of 32-34 spindles & some chassis parts that need to be cleaned up before I use/sell them. Any dangers of embrittlement with this stuff?

We have used a fair bit of the stuff and never had reason to consider your concern. That said, if you are worried then try some acid. Light rust = vinegar, serious scaling = muriatic. Be careful with the stronger acids...it doesn't care what it gets on. Have some neutralizer on hand.

  3. I've read muriatic acid causes hydrogen embrittlement, so I'd rather not chance using it. I'll probably just stick to Evapo-Rust.

  4. I think hydrogen embrittlement takes place at elevated temps, like when welding.
    I would sandblast suspension components

Acid exposure can do it, too.

    Sandblast.

I don't know about suspension parts, but I soaked some rusty painted cowl lights in Evaporust overnight and they came out absolutely spotless. It didn't touch the paint that was still there, even shined it up, and the metal looked like the day it was made. However, I needed to coat it right away with WD40 because it started to rust immediately.
