How about wrapping up a new radiator/electric fan set-up and forgetting to plug the heat sensor pigtail into the fan harness......?........ right before leaving on a road trip......??

 

Got in a rush putting a 350 together for one of the early dirt cars I helped out on. The engine ran great, there were no problems with it. However, I forgot to tighten up the engine mount bolts and it caused a horrendous crash. Totalled the car and put the driver in the hospital for almost a week. Now that's what is called a learning experience!

 

My girlfriend and still laugh about "I don't know what it is, but it's definitely not that"
It turned out to be "that" LOL

 

The first time that I rebuilt an engine it turned into an ash tray.

 

After deciding that my sisters engine (off topic V6) needed a throttle plate shaft fix. I bought another and found the threads had been stripped.

 

A friend of mine needed his 289 rebuilt. We had a mutual Chevy buddy , that was going through a divorce, needed money and something to do…. So “Flip” got the job. About a week or so my friends ask if I can come over and look at that 289, Chevy, Boy , can’t get it started! Well he had it wired like a Chevy.
I rewired it , it busted right off,but it was knocking real bad! My friend said start it and rev it up a little. I did and a rod went out through the pan!

My friend asked what happen, I told him , it through a rod! He was all pissed. So I ask him “ You didn’t expect it to run forever did you? “
As it turned out , our friend had forgotten the rod nuts! Just finger tight!

a few weeks ago I changed the oil in my DD. I only put the drain plug in finger tight .... as I am cleaning up I think to myself "Did I tighten the drain plug?", then thought of course I did... but checked anyway.

I have a habit of thinking I forgot something I actually did, which I guess is better than just not doing it and finding out the hard way. finally, for once, this habit paid off.

 

When I got my 32 running it was in the spring of the year, I had put water in for the initial fire up and had several leaks. After it was broke in and leaks were fixed we drove the wheels off the car that summer. The winter set in and my pops gets accepted to put put his A-v8 in the grand nation roadster show so we load up and head to so cal from South Dakota. I come home ten days later to all out frigid temperatures and walk down to the shop to find out my furnace had shit out and water under the 32. Open up the hood and find the block fatality cracked. That was a real pisser!

 

392 Hemi I was bolting together a few years ago. Slipped the cam into the block late at night, then decided that was enough, so hit the shower and the sack. Next evening I finished up the engine, bolted it all together and started to clean up the workbench. What the hell, why do I have an extra cam retainer and cam chain oiling trough? Oops, not extras.

 

Told this elsewhere on the HAMB but I started my 53 Buick standing in front leaning into the engine compartment, starter switch was on the carburator. It started, I had left it in drive so it climbed up my front porch, the porch poles shut the hood on me and pushed my head down toward the fan. I was wondering "What Now" when I decided to choke it off with my hand, it died and I got out without a scratch. Had to fix the porch, the 53 Buick Skylark was OK.

I guess I am lucky that way, I forget where I put the wrench/socket/ratchet so I have lots of time to remember what I forgot while looking for my tools.....

 

I like to put tag on eng stand. What has been done, rods torqued, mains torqued etc.. whats left.

 

Heck yeah but I have to say I’m getting better with age.

 

Don't forget to take out the neutral safety switch jumper wire before starting in Drive and gun the gas and hit the shed door. Err..., it wasn't me, it was a "friend". Honest.
And the best place for a SBC oil pressure switch is screwed into the motor, not sitting on the bench on initial start-up.. Unless you want a rust-free shed roof, just in the area above the motor.
