Funny, I had that same thought back in 2003 when we rode the "66". Still trying to find the photo's of that last trip, I took the same shot as you did. Also took a bunch of pics at Oatman and Hackberry.
I live here in Santa Fe, NM. Here in NM, they have a lot of the pre-1937 Route 66 preserved and used as 'scenic routes'. We've cruised plenty of stretches of those stretches o nlocal cruises and that. I have a rental house in Albuquerque, which is near 98th and Central, less the a 1/2 mile south of Central Ave, Route 66. Downtown in Albq is great. I have a sister that lives in Seligman, AZ. That's an awesome US 66 town...Classic Main Street. I've driven the stretch of US 66 from Seligman to Kingman plenty of times. I wish I had some pics. There's plenty of cool stuff out there...
In 1996 i drove on 66 from barstow to seligman. seligman is one of the best places around 66. I met there a old lady (maby 80years old) she told me that her mother is born in tirol (austria) where i come from. that is what i ever say; the world is like a smal place with a lot of brother and sisters!!!!!! I never forget this lady and her old shop!!!!
WOW Now this is a cool thread, Love the pic's, As a truck driver I drove Many Many times to L.A. and back to Cleveland, was running every week and every Now and then would get off the big road and hit rt 66, Have Lot's of pic's, I started driving in 87' so they are not as old as some of these pic's, But still cool to look at I will see about getting them up loaded soon. Keep the Pic's coming.
Not sure why I took this 50 year old picture from the window of the chopped Merc with the Carson top. Maybe it was of the clouds or rain ahead of us. Man, we sure had that antenna extended all the way up trying to catch some traveling tunes. If I only knew then what I'd like to have today, there would have been thousands of photos taken. Film was expensive and that's why most of my photos were slides. They all need to be cleaned but I'm not sure I want to tackle that.
YEAH! I don't think I could get enough of that Merc. It's got to be one of the nicest I've seen. -Brad
Great pics! I've recently been talking to some locals here in Vegas about a trip from Vegas to Flagstaff. That section of 66 is really a nice drive. Think we'll be doing it when the weather cools a bit. Anybody interested in joining in on the fun can send me a pm. Charlie
Everyday. I live I block off of Rt 66. Right behind http://www.henrysroute66.com/ He has been cutting Volkswagen rabbits in half to stand them on end and make them look like the Cadillac Ranch.
Did Victorville to Barstow this year on the way to VLV. In a rental.... Started at the Victorville Route 66 Museum, worth a visit if your there...Free Entry
This photo was published in a hard cover book that I have around here somewhere but can't find right now. It was taken in OKC at the drags when we drove the car there from Redondo Beach, CA in 1958. In the background is one of the Drifters coupes that they raced there. We tagged along with them in a caravan.
Some of my fondest memories are of the original Chicago to St Louis span of the "old 66!" This has been a great post! Gratis Maxis!!!!!
Here is a picture that someone had posted on another thread a couple of months ago. Not sure what it was published in but I had never seen the photo before. It too was taken at the OKC drags in 58. I wonder how many more photos of it were taken by people who were there almost 50 years ago.
And lastly, here is one taken in front of my house not too long after my friend bought the car off a used car lot in Long Beach. It has Buick spinners on it in this photo, compared to the Olds spinners that were on it in OKC. My friend also had a set of Dodge Lancer caps that he would loan me for my 49 Chevy Fleetline.
3 times in my youth my father was transferred from our home of Lancaster , Calif to Cicinnati , Ohio . This was starting in the early '50's and up to the early '60's , and yes I made them stop at every reptile zoo , indian curio shop , giant plaster dinosaur , cave , mine and meteor crater all 6 crossings . Right now I actually live on Route 66 . It's one block from my house in Santa Rosa , New Mexico . WooHoo !! Any HAMBsters coming through gimme a call . We have an auto museum and an actual old car wrecking yard . There's also a stretch of road where at certain hours you can go REALLY fast . I mean , you could , but it would be wrong
Steve, I have that issue, the car with the flames there is the old Mayors car of San Bernardino haha I still remember that. I used to go to the Route 66 show when I lived in San Bernardino out in Devore. There is the old Route 66 road that is closed down near San Bernardino. I used to ride my bike on it and follow the train, it was kind of near Glen Helen, Blockbuster Pavilion, etc.
On a trip from Australia in 1995 we drove from Amarillo Texas(had a great night at the Golden Light Cafe, best chilli) headed east across Texas Oklahoma, through the corner of Kansas and then into Missouri.Stayed on Route 66 nearly all the way and then dropped off at Carthage and headed south to Eureka Springs Arkansas(highly recommended to visit) and then onto Knoxville for the NSRA Street Rod Nationals, via Memphis and Nashville. Now we are in the NLW Club(no longer working) we will be back for more of Route 66.
Reading this thread I am amazed at how few of you Americans have only done sections of the road. 4 years ago myself & 4 other car guys spent a month driving from Chicago to LA. Best holiday ever, but we came 1/2 way around the world to do it. Maybe it appeals more to foreigners? If you are considering doing it, get a good guide book as alot of the old road is no longer driveable and allow plenty of time. Great memories. Bonneville next week so that is the next biggy to cross off the list, can't wait. Russell.
I was raised on Rt. 66 in Lebanon MO. My dad leased the Dream Village Motel on 66. As famous as the road is today we thought it was a pain in the butt back then and was glad when I-44 came into play. We went to Springfield on the weekends and I-44 made that a lot easier (and safer at the speeds we traveled back then). Munger Moss Motel is still there and caters to Rt. 66 travelers and in the public library in Lebanon is a really nice Rt. 66 museum.
This is a picture postcard of the Trav L Odge in Rolla, Mo. on Rt. 66. It was owned and operated by my cousin Maude from the 40's till her death in 1952. My great uncle, O.W. Dickerson, ran it until it's sale in the mid 50's.
There is a color picture of this fine Merc on page 5 of Grease Machines by the Consumer Guide folks published in 1978. The fellow standing next to the car has "the look" also with the shades, t shirt, and hair. Wouldn't this be a spectacular barn find?
You mean this one? I've often wondered if this was the guy who owned or built this car or if he owned it after my friend sold it. In this photo it has spotlights but didn't in 1958 and I don't remember there being any holes where they may have been mounted. I've also seen another photo of it from the front with CA plate MVC 151 on it. The license plate number in 1958 was PCP 393. I think numbers were issued sequentially which would indicate the photo with spotlights was taken before my friend bought it. I was looking at an interesting site this morning about CA License Plates but I couldn't find any info about the numbering system back then.
