Hot Rods Ever feel like calling it quits for a while with cars???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RoadFarmer, Mar 1, 2011.

  1. I swear....it seems like every time I drive my car lately something goes wrong. Put a new fuel pump on....ran great for about a half day....then it dies on me....no fuel making it to the carb. Lines plugged up somewhere. It's starting to get old....but I still keep going back. If my car hobby was a relationship it'd be an abusive one hahah and my caddy is a cheatin' bitch haha. Anyone else ever feel like it's a never ending cycle of bad shit? I guess sooner or later it will all be fresh and new if stuff keeps going out! Sorry had to vent!

Yep, I feel that way so I walk away for a little while and comeback when I have time and the energy to do it right. Not driving them for awhile gets me motivated. Also going to a car show or someother event gets me going again. Patience is not a virtue it has to be earned.

  4. hear ya....that's why there's more then one around....to show some attention to....hang in there-at least you know what right (been fixed) with the o'gal....

Never. I may get frustrated with a specific car but never cars in general....kinda like women:)

  8. Got out for quit a few years. Billet era turned me off plus just burn out or whatever excuse. Got into motorcycles for awhile...now back to cars full swing after buying my old build back after 25 years

I got pretty well out of it for several years and probably will never be as intense a car nut as I was 30 years ago. But the most boring people I meet only have one hobby or interest no matter what the hobby or interest is.
Less time spent on the projects but a lot higher quality time when I do work on them. A lot less rod trots attended but picking and choosing which events I go to for the quality of the event rather than just because it's close enough to go to to collect another dash plaque and buy another T shirt.

And for the past few years I have had another toy to play with

I walked away from it for a few years. But I decided to get back into it after getting burned out with work helps me clear my head.

I have not walked away from it . More like been forced away from it . Until money loosens up and things start looking up my project will have to sit . I just hope it doesnt come to me having to sell it like has happened to so many other Hambers. I dont see it coming to that but anything is possible.

I went motorcycle racing for about 10 years. Still involved with stuff that goes vroom though. You know how much bike crap you can fit in a one bedroom apartment and storage locker? lol I did trade a Triumph chopper for a shoebox ford. My heart still wasn't back into it at the time so I traded the car for a shovel head in a rigid frame that I finished rode for 2 weeks and then sold/traded for cash and a ski boat with a blown 455 olds that I cleaned up got running and the first weekend on the lake got offered double what I had into it and yep sold it. Bought a decker rode it one summer, sold it. My wife calls it mechanical ADD. She was pissed when the decker went. I think the Chevy's a keeper...so far... if the right shoebox came along...no no no.

A lot of people spend their life trying to do everything. If you can focus the ADD on one thing like classic cars and stay committed to that...the rest of your life will fall into place. It may be frustating at times with the price of parts, availability, shows coming up, women bitching at the cost of things...but in the end when you can look back and say "yeah, I built that in the last few years" that is the calming phrase that makes me put in 10 hrs working to provide, 1-2hrs on the rod and whatever sparatic time I can squeeze in on the youngster (at this very young 1-3 month stage) when he's not on the boob! My hardest fight is my concience, when I want to be in the "Gerge" as we call it or being drawn to enjoy your life beyond it, which I think is totally necassary. I am truly consumed by the automobile but need to find balance with the general public to keep from becoming a "MY PRECIOUS" freak that knows nothing else...my 2 cents. Balance, never acheived, always sought after.

  22. i've slowed down the last year or so, never gave up just slowed down. i want to start again but my add has pack up my garage (with parts, equipment and cars) so now i need more room.

  23. I drive a '72 Falcon every day. I think I'm crazy. My '56 Holden project, well I often think nah, too hard, sell it.

Today on the road the the accelerator pedal snapped where it hooks up. First house I went to I ask and this cool cat offers his arc welder. When I say I'm rusty with arc, he lays 2 sweet little beads on the breaks. Lends me files, round & flat.
I drive away. I'll return with beer, even though he says no matter.

Some days are diamonds, some are stones. Some, like today, are a mix of both.

It helps to have different auto interests, different eras too. I think the HAMB and internet in general have brought more care people together to share the hobby. I really don't worry about finishing a project, and having one running and regestered is just a far away dream.

Still waiting for that sensation to accrue. I'm 66 now so it will have to come soon or I'll go out without ever experiencing it.
