Ever feel like calling it quits from the hobby?

I get it brother what with the cost of building a car, the bad parts we have to put up with, not being able to find the part you need and low rent paint and body men its enough to make you want to quit. On second thought forget what I said.

I quit once! ...1970 to 1992. ...but somehow I kept two Model A's, thank goodness. Now if I quit it will only be because I am too blind or weak. Hopefully, I have another ten or fifteen years left in me. I hope to still be building in my eighties!

 

Nope, never, only the weak say that, and they should find another 'hobby' so the pickings are better for us.

Never, been doing it for over 30 years now. It the last thing I think about when I go to sleep and the first thing I think about when I wake up!

 

I feel like this only because I have too many projects and acquired too many parts for the projects. I'm literally stumbling over stuff to work on one project. I need to focus on one or two cars, not 5 or 6. I am thinning the herd, and getting rid of stuff.


Because of this, I think I have deluded my attention out so thin I lose interest quickly and get frustrated.

 

There are times where it feels like I'm taking one step forward and two back, or it's costing more than it would ever be worth, but I couldn't imagine walking away.

I will say that the frustration I feel does end up getting so bad sometimes that I find myself wanting to shortcut everything toward the end...just to get it the damn thing on the road.

 

Sometimes it feels like more of an addiction than a hobby or way of life, to me.

It consumes so much of my thoughts, time and money.

I feel like I am a hot rodder, for better or worse, that's how I identify myself. Even if I sold everything, I know I would still think about it.

My coworkers sit all day and talk about their fantasy football teams or whatever they are. I don't really get that. I definitely can't see myself doing that.

 

Wow. I just went thru your build thread on your 51. You've come such a long way...I can't imagine walking away from that now. That car will be a blast to drive! Great work.
Cars like that require a bigger commitment that the model A coupes I seem to be drawn to. Keep plugging away when you can and mix your other interests in when they pop up. What's the hurry? Building a car is like eating an elephant...one bite at a time.

I just need to stop dragging other possible projects home before finishing one(s) already started.

 

I had a dry spell of about 8 yrs of no owing of any old vehicles due to wife/kids and a divorce, but once my situation became stable again I got back to my old self and bought some old rusty vehicles to spend my money on. I take occasionally breaks from the hobby by fishing or whatever I find interesting to fawk with. But I will never give up on being around old cars ever again.

 

Frustrated sometimes quit - hell no

Nothing gets done as fast as I plan. It always cost more than I plan.

But - My "car" friends are always there for me.
I would rather travel in an old car than a new any day.
I can work on them myself as opposed to a technician and I am never stranded. Car people are the best.

 

sometimes its a ever consuming lifestyle that will take everything you have.....and then some.... I remember one summer when I had to drive a rental hot rod....man that sucked

Yes, right now! I just found out that I have to have my car and shop cleared out, by the end of this month. I've had a stalled project for some time, and have been battling a health issue. Other family members were supposed to be part of the project financally, but that didn't happen for various reasons. Now they took on another project with my brother and spent enough on it, that the first one could have been finished. Then i find out my brother convinced the landlord to put his name on the lease, but because he got a bigger shop at the same place, he gave up mine, without telling me! I new it would come at some point, so had arranged for someone else to share the shop, but now the landlord says it's rented to someone else! What a mess.

 

I LOOOOOVE guys who quit. I have a buddy who quits every few years or so. I always buy up a bunch of his stuff at knock-down fire sale prices. Then a few months later, he buys up a bunch more stuff, then quits again. I hope he quits again soon, he has a closed-cab '29 Model A pu I'm coveting...

Well i am glad to say i never quit, just random thoughts of quitting.
After today's visit to the garage i don't think i will be quitting anytime soon.

 

Give er hell Ricky! I used to dirt track race for about 18 years, now there is a hobby that eats time and $$$$$ What I like about these old cars is, everything you put into them makes them that much nicer. And I'm not wadding it up on Saturday night, Mark

 

I packed it in for about 6 years . Thats all i could handle . As bad as my current project was it was a done deal when I seen it . That car thing will be with me til my dying days . Could have picked a cheaper hobby when I was younger and more easily influenced LOL !!!

Work on it all week, spend all my money on it, Then Saturday night some asshole spins ya in turn four and you get to start all over again. That'll burn anyone out on a sport.

It took me about seven or eight years but I learned that lesson too.
