Ever find yourself putting cars before other financial and practical priorities??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ItalianStallion, Aug 31, 2007.

  1. When I think real hard about money and life I still owe it all to the "Queen my lovely wife" without her I'd still be the gear head ass-hole that they were making fun of in high school. She gives me the direction to go forward. Now I'm Mr Gear-Head and people respect me for it. And yes Mazzoma you have to have a plan and stick to it and the sooner it goes into effect the better off you will be>>>>.

My girlfriend and I just alked about this. Hot rods and bikes are my life. I always pay my bills, but when it comes to whats the most important thing to me, it's the cars. I don't want to get married, and I don't want kids. I just want to be able to make enough money so I can afford the parts to build what I like. Call me stupid for thinking like that, but It's my life not yours.

can't blame a guy for knowing what he wants.

Just don't expect her to stick around if you 'never want to get married'

I said that one to many times and I wound up in a pretty shitty situation last fall!

To afford stuff for the car I dont eat out much, I cut back on my buyin drinks at a bar intake, I work mad over time and I rent a room out in my house to help with the mortgage. You just gotta make choices and do what you can to keep progress on all fronts. And having a supportive chick is mui bueno!

Got married in 84...bought my home..kids came '88 and '90. My cars sat in my garage for 22 years. I worked on things a little..but kids (eat money)..homes (eat money and time).
I coached baseball (son..still do)..taught my daughter guitar..loved every frickin' minute. Coached my son in work outs for 6 MLB teams..8 colleges this summer !! (Think schoralship..kid..please keep throwin' strikes)
    Family..home...then stuff.

My wife and kids..all drive much newer cars that my DD..

I have my motorcycle I bought in 76..and another I splurged on new in 01. My kids and family always came first...and still do..

    ...........HOWEVER...

Yes..I longed to finish the 120 that I started in 1974.. I could barely walk in the garage without shielding my eyes from the cars..:(

In 1983 I put some money with a friend in some property to "invest" ..finally selling. Down payment got me parts and time to do the Jag project..
I've helped others get theirs done..worked on friends cars..now it was MY TURN..!

Got it done in 2006..sometimes I never would have thought I would live long enough.

    PS.

My friend is getting his '55 Chev PU done. I helped him get it to the shop for the re-clip (was poorly done Volare)..picking out his motor. (SBC..was tired emmission era 455 Buick)..

    We LIVED LONG ENOUGH..!

My wife and I each get $100.00 bucks a month allowance that we don't have to accountable for. If we 'invest' our allowance and make money on it we can each keep it in our allowance accounts. All my projects and garage consumables come out of that money. I've done very well with that little of play income, buy whole cars for 2-3 hundred and part em out for much more. So all the income goes to mortgage, bills, donations and savings first.
It great for the relationship because there is no tension over purchases that the other spouse thinks are foolish!!

That is a very dangerous game to play. I always try to keep it as a hobby and use money that can be spared on it. Never take away money for bills, retirement savings, insurance, etc.

I also try to sell, trade, barter as much as possible.

Spending money you don't have or need to spend more wisely elsewhere can become a recipe for fincial problems that force you to sell the crap you just bought.

Gotta pay bills first and support the family. What little (if any) is left can go to my car projects.

  13. I sympathize completely. Never done anything but put the hobby first my whole life. Thats what wives are for. To worry about all the other shit!! Build the damn car. Everything else will work itself out. My Pop's creedo, and it's worked OK for me for the first 63 years.

If you're sitting in a library or at a friends house, using a computer to come here because the lights got turned off, but you have a new 3 carb setup on your flatty..... yea, you might think about changing your life.:D

"yea, you might think about changing your life." Definitely...consider a quad manifold, and you need to pick up an Oxy-Acetylene setup so you can cope with no electricity...

Now that I'm single i spend every dime on the cars after I pay the bills.
There does come a point where you don't have to spend money every week and you just have to get your ass out in the garage and work.

Of course I don't put the cars as primary...airplane parts come first...THEN the hot rods...then, I might buy some groceries....I mean...you GOT to organize the priorities.

well the answer for me is yes, i put my 58 ford before anything else.
why? im barley 18. i have two jobs, and start college in one month. i put 1000 aside for books, and i pay cell phone, gym, and gas every month.
i always make sure i can pay those, and when i know i can, ill spend my money on my car.

sad thing is my friends dont like me loving my car so much, they call it a piece of junk and a waste of money. i havent hung out with them in over a month due to me having two jobs. the only reason im keeping two jobs is because i want my 58 running. i honestly have gone into depression without it i think, no joke, my mom and sisters say they never see me smile unless im workin on the thing.

and now its stuck in the shop, with a mechanic trying to figure out a way to hook up the carb linkage and a kickdown lever :[ i called him yesterday and he said he doesnt know if he can do it. major letdown....
