It happens, my daily driver is a '69 Ford shortbox with the aerodynamics of a brick. 300/6 power nothing with 3 speed column shift, I'll soon be changing to floor shifted 3 speed with overdrive. That feels like creature comfort versus my '28 A V/8 roadster and cockpit cover with no top. Flathead, straight pipes and bias plys are primative, but still alot more fun. I'll take the diagnostic advantage of both over anything newer. If it has fuel and spark it will run. I borrowed my dads '98 Lincoln Towncar recently and about put myself through the windshield doing a quick stop, not to mention oversteering my way down the highway the first few miles. Sure was comfortable but uninspiring once I figured out where everything was. I'll keep it simple.

the re-orientation is even weirder going to and from anything else to a unmodified Model T... adjusting spark and throttle to match speed and terrain... apparently people even drove these things after a few beers back in the day...

Ha ha - I've done the same thing. Feels kinda silly when you do that. I'm glad I usually drive alone.

I get in my wife's car and find myself swerving slightly as I accelerate, compensating for the locker that's not there?? She admits doing the same when swapping rides :)

I forget how to dim the headlights and have occasionally overdone it one the brake pedal. Other than that no, my "new" car is a pos '94 Sentra that doesn't have enough power to get out of its own way and has lost fifth gear. Once I'm done on the Comet's suspension mods the Nissan will probably wind up in a make me an offer, as is, take it now please! Craigslist ad

I learned to drive on a manual and have always owned one since. When I was 19, I took my car in for warranty work and was given a loaner Corolla. I had to do a quick stop one day, so reverting to muscle memory, I pushed both feet to the floor and threw the car into park in an effort to downshift. It's more than a little disconcerting to hear the parking pawl banging away like the little tab on Wheel of Fortune when you're doing 60 MPH. Fortunately, I got it back in gear pretty quickly without hurting anything.

I know Im not the only one. Get out of something with floor shift into a column shift. Next thing you know your reaching for a shifter thats not there.

My (OT) DD is a '94 South African version of a VW Golf Mk1. It feels more like my Morris Minor than like any new car I've driven. If I ever drive a new car it'd be a rental or taking someone's car somewhere, and I generally hate it: the unreal air-conditioned cocoon environment, the weightless controls, the power steering cycling on and off in long sweepers, the feel-less servo clutch, and especially the oversensitive non-linear brake feel.

The first thing I notice when I park my roadster for the night and drive home in my daily driver is that it doesn't pull as hard. I keep pushing down on the gas pedal and then I realize I am not driving the 27 any more.

Our newest is 04. But those were bought before I was old enough to drive an before we really got into the car hobby. Mom doesn't really want to drive a hotrod everyday so she drives a regular SUV. Going from my truck to one of those 2 in the same day, takes a little but to get used to.

I drive my hot rods most days and often find that after driving my model A for several days, which has a 5 speed i tend to climb into my f150 and reach over to grab the shifter except that doesnt work since its an automatic. I also have almost put myself through the windshield after spending a few days on non-power drum brakes.....hot rods are just more fun to drive i get bored driving in a new car. I like to be working while im driving

I do my level best to NEVER be stuck driving late model stuff. My girlfriend went out last year and bought a brand new Honda that I refer too as "the impurity", simply because I explaind to her that her predicessor had always driven Hondas and was never allowed to park them in my driveway.

The biggest difference with me in a late model - my attitude! Why in hell ANYBODY would want to drive a car that won't go straight, has no road feel, mosterous understeer, 6.5 million buttons all maked with tiny indesypherable hyroglyphics, and can't be seen out of at any price is completely beyond me comprehension... Damn, if that's what "normal" people drive, no wonder they kill each other in droves!

No. I have forgotten I was in an automatic, though. You don't realize how strong your clutch leg is until you've used it on the brake. :D

shift quadrant on the Studebaker column was PRNDLR. My 66 c10 was PRNDL. My habit was to get in, slam the truck into low and go. good thing I lived in the country.

  30. I only drive new garbage at work. and I more often forget they are not stick, so I go for the clutch.
