I was driving the wagon yesterday on my way to lunch with a few hot rod friends and stopped for gas, while I was pumping a older than me black man at the pump on the other side as me was the wagon a '53?,I told him close it's a '54 a he ask me questions as I was filling up.

He said he use to fool around with cars but was too old to mess with them now..and then he said,"I have a 1954 Ford truck but it hasn't been on the road since the 80's".

I ask him if he was interested in selling the truck and he said he had been thinking about it,I handed him a card with my name and number and he stuck it in his wallet an walked back to his car,as I was getting in the wagon a y oung man and his son ask me a couple of questions and they walked back to their car.

As I cranked up and started to pull out and the elder gentleman waved be down and I rolled the window down,he had a picture of his '54 Ford truck and it looked pretty nice,i told him again if you decide to sell I would be interested.

Wither or not I get a call it's nice to know there are still some decent looking projects still out there. HRP

Several years ago I was in Macon, MO on my way to Quincy, IL for their fall Color Run in mid October. I stopped at the grocery store and an older guy came up to me and asked me if I would like to go out to his place and look at some old cars he had for sale.

He proceeded to tell me there were 5 of them and he needed desperately to get them moved off of his property because he sold it and was moving. He said there was a couple of Model A's, a mid-thirties Chevy, and a couple of old trucks and several rear ends and transmissions and stuff like that. I didn't really believe him at first, but he insisted.

He only wanted a 1000 bucks for all of it, but he needed it moved right away. I told him I didn't have any way to haul it back and I couldn't go out to see them right now. Finally I had to tell him I wasn't interested.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I took him up on it. :)

Many years ago (about 40) I got a tip while 'refueling'......in a local restaurant. The 'tip' was unintentional as some guys were talking in an adjacent booth and mentioned a '34 Ford over in Missouri, about a 30 mile ride from where I live.

They gave enough detail to one another (and me) to track it down. Sure enough, it was there and it was a Vicky! But nobody was home. At the time I really wasn't in much of a position to do anything about it anyway, but told a rodder friend about it and he soon went there and was successful in attempting to buy it.

Not in Orygun, we can't pump our own gas here.
One thing you here a lot from the pump jockeys is usually something like " my uncle has one just like that"........except it's a four door or a 6 cylinder or..... well, I'm sure ya'll have heard the same thing.

I've bought a couple right at the gas station. Best example (this is 1968 in Oakland), we stopped at a Texaco where a guy I'd been in the Navy was wrenching. We're gassing up, about to head back to Vallejo when this green '51 Chev wagon comes shaking into the island next to us. Buddy Gary asks him if he needs any gas; he doesn't need any but could sure use some either used or bulk oil ... by this time the smoke & fumes are thickening. A couple weeks before I had bought the Olds up in Napa, and it needed some inside wood & trim stuff. I ask him if he'd get rid of it, & with no hesitation asks me if I got 20 bucks & can he use phone, here's the title ... he calls his wife to tell her the good news, & we fill it with oil & split for Vallejo. Now it escapes me just how far it is from McArthur in Oakland to Sacramento St. in Vallejo, but it was out of oil when we got home.
Just think of the prices then - none of the 3 cars were even remotely interesting to anyone - everything on the street was raised up & had to look race car ...
The '55 Customline Fordor 6/3 speed was $45 from the back lot of the Ford dealer, came with 3 flats & 3/4 tank of gas. The Olds wagon was $55 & 3 days' yard work. All the lift gate & tailgate hardware was plated in the Chev, so it went into the Olds. There's maybe another $50 worth of wheels & tires HPIM0448.JPG

The only time I heard of a lead on a car when I was pumping gas, was when a guy walked up next to me with a gas can about 5 years ago unexpectedly, and asked me if I could take him to his car off the side of the road, out of gas! I drove him the 2 miles, and helped him get his 1949 Ford 4-door running, and a big wave out the window followed by honking sounds..........my good deed for the day, but it was a nice car overall, and asked him if it was for sale...emphatic "no", but said with a smile....I would have bought it simply because the interior looked so nice!

The key is to get the other person's phone number otherwise you may never hear back.

Got some parts given to me after chatting with folks at the gas pump but never a whole vehicle.

I hear ya' Bruce....I don't mind body work, engine, or frame work, and the such, but if the interior is totally shot....I tend to balk at it...might be my hang-up to be sure, but I'm a sucker for nice interior...car could be simply awful, but if it has a nice seat, carpet and headliner, and dash is a bit polished...hey, I'm already bought! haha....aw, the joys of cars....what can I say!;):p

Yeah, I've gotten leads at stations before, 99.9% of the time they don't pan out. Usually overpriced junk they hope to find a sucker for or they just don't know what the have. Once a "I got a 34 Ford coupe, I want $800 for it" (that changed my plans for the day) turned out to be a totally roached 37 Dodge sedan body he had dug it out of a riverbed. I wouldn't of hauled off for parts if it was free. I asked the guy why he thought it was a 34 Ford, he said because he thought it looks like the one in the California Kid movie:eek:
Had a guy once checking out my 61 Olds at a station one day. Asked if I had bought it new. Told the guy yeah, I did but we had to put it in my Dad's name since I was only 5 at the time. He just looked at me funny and walked away. Guess I must look older then I am but gezz, didn't think I looked that old.
