I think that we have a disease in our hobby where some guys who are flush in parts or cars that another may want or need like to hold on to them to feed some sort of feeling of superiority in themselves. I have a ****head acquaintance near me who does that with his '40 Ford and '57 Chevy parts.

Had a guy on the Fordbarn with the initials "JT" who named his price for some '36 Ford rear radius rod that I agreed to back out of the deal. He told me that he knew it was wrong to back out of a deal but some local guy had come by and offered him more. I even agreed to pay the higher price if he would throw in another part as a compromise. He himmed and hawed and I just said to hell with it. I'm afraid that the idea of integrity and standing by your word is going south in this country.

I looked at a '29 chevy coupe. I needed to think about it. Called him with a offer sometime later. We agreed on a cash price and a time to meet the next day. He calls the next morning and tells my wife the deal is off. Some one showed up with the same amont that I offered him that night. He said "Cash in hand is king" or something like that. Probably dont want to do business with a guy like that anyway. Hard to believe any thing he has told you.

Indeed, if someone poured juice on my deal I'd be torqued too!!!

Seriously though, the guy obviously felt bad about backing out, he knew the score. The $100 was his way of expressing that he was truly sorry and didn't want you to think he was jerking you around. Sure it ****s it fell apart, but you got a chance to see how a fair person does things. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again if I were you...

****s on not getting the car. Sounds like a real stand up dude for kicking in the extra $100! Put it towards the next car.

Well buyers and seller's remorse are one thing but being a stand up business man is another thing. You make a deal stick to it. I buy for some people.Once a guy sends a deposit. If the seller decides to back out, take more money whatever,it rough **** time.He took a deposit and is required by law to follow through.
Another guy I know took a deposit and then had a guy come by and say,"I'll give you more".Being a *****,he took it.The 1st guy shows up with the balance,he tells him he'll give him his money back.Guy looked at him and said "you can give me $2,000 and I'll go away and you will get off cheap".He was promptly told to screw off. Within a few days he was served with papers and had to go to court. The $2,000 was cheap.
Personally I'll take a loss for making a bad sale rather than back out and loose all credibility.
Where I come from your word is your bond.
