. I understand that this is why the 1934 windows have the small sail panel at the rear of the window opening, while the 1933s do not....

My dad recently pointed out the difference between 33 and 34 window openings and explained why. I never knew this before he showed me.

  3. The regulator has some long opening in them their is a screw that sticks up thru these long slotted openings this helps the smoker window work. Try installing one of these and not know anything about it. Drive you nuts trying to get the glass to work right. Pulled the glass and regulator out of a 36 about 15 times till I finally found the screw holes in these slots. Lots of times the screw is left out and used as a regular window. Takes a special shouldered screw. Antique auto in Arlington used to have the screws. I have a regulator but cannot post pictures anymore.

Do any of the Ford pickups (specifically 35-38) have them? The only thing I don't like about that era Ford is the lack of wing-style vent windows.

    my '47 Tudor has them.

Notice the ash tray in the trim panel is right below the front edge of the window.

They were configured for ventilation in general, not just for "smokers" in particular.

It never occurred to me to think about all the 'younger generation(s)' that may not
have been aware of this common feature on cars of the '30s & '40s. Lots of clever
stuff in those old cars. :)

  8. I love leaving the Smokers Windows in my '34 5-window open at car shows.

Few notice, but those that do are usually stumped. I've had several people say "look, his glass was cut wrong". LOL...

Ford started using them in late '33's...
They allowed ventilation through the car without having a windstorm.

Yes - I was talking generally. The 1934 model year cars with the sail panel and the 1934 hood, grille and headlights were phased in around late August and early September 1933 according to where they were built. I have seen cars with one 1933 and one 1934 door on them - was this a factory install/snafu? The 1933s were only produced from Feb/March 1933 thru August/September which is why they are rarer than '34s which had a fifteen/sixteen month run....

My '35 Ford Deluxe sedan has them. My Dad told me about them when I bought the car in 1971.

A friend once told me of a car his mother inlaw has in a shed that had rear side windows that moved front to back, in the back position they rotated from the side into the back of the car. He's not a car guy and didn't know the make of car, just that it was old. Anyone ever hear of such a car?

I wondered why my 36 dodge windows did that. Thanks for the info.

  18. Hey Mike,,You brought something up from the depths of my old memory...Years ago
an auto glass shop over in Marshall,(Tx) called me one day ,said he was installing rear side glass in a 40 Ford and did not understand how...I went over to his shop and showed him ..This was common in the old days, for ventilation, not "smokers"..

Ha! I just noticed this a few days ago in my 46. The drivers side is all seized but I felt like trying my luck in the passenger side and it slid backwards! I've seen it before but it's still neat.

I closed it back up and went about my day not thinking about if I turn it the other way it'll roll down haha. So all the way up plus some it'll slide back or when you roll it down sliding back is the first motion?

GM had vent windows and Henry Ford's cheap way to compete with GM. Never heard about the patent. Henry Ford also was too cheap to pay Bendix the royalty on its patent for self energizing brakes. He was forced to do it on Lincoln cars because they were heavier.

Stock on Ford passenger cars from 1934 through 1939. Ford and other makes way of having cabin ventilation without vent/wing windows. Believe all Fordors through 48 share the feature in the back doors. Tudors as well unless the quarter windows are popouts.

Are you sure they were stock? My '36 3w is torn apart right now, but during the short time I had it on the road, I don't recall the window moving rear-ward, just straight down.
