Wiring*****s no matter what, but that doesn't look that bad really. I don't even see any wire nuts or bare wires.
IF you run a high output alternator don't run it into the fusebox. That seems to be lesson one. Fuse the power feed to the box. There may have been another lesson. Oh yeah, keep an extinguisher in the car. Luckily water put it out, but there is an extinguisher within easy reach.
I too have had the pleasure. Hope I don't have to do it again for awhile. But it will go back, honest!
Wiring threads are like Poisonous non poisonous snake threads, both can be fixed with an ax or shovel.
That's nuttin. Add to that the dash and engine harness' on a late model. (With the dash gone) Then you have a real mess.
What do you need all that***** for? The beauty of old cars is that they are simple to work on, why complicate things?
Some people cant get enough bells and whistles!!!! If it was mine I would make the wiring as simple as possible
head lights ,tail lights, parking lights, turn signals, brake lights, dimmer switch, instrument lights, wipers, clutch safty switch, heater switch ,oil pressure, altinator,,horn, temp gauge, tach, battery, starter and solinoid, dome lights, choke, radio, speakers, ampmeter, gas gauge.clock, fuse panel. I lived the 50s,seems to me ,other than a couple of these items these are your traditional items.Want to pass inspection? Drive at night,on the freeway?Which bell and whistle would you remove to make it as simple as possible?
I agree, I've seen worse, and worked on worse! My 70 Ford early Bronco was a rat's nest of wiring, when I first got it. A little patience and time, and you should be able to work with what you have. I have heard HayWire and some other wiring setups (cant recall the names, but not Painless and Centech - both of which are great panel/wiring kits, but will cost more), are pretty good for the money. There are a lot of wiring vendors listed in Streetrodder, Rod & Custom etc. (or check the Alliance vendor listings).
under dash of my 51 hudson, and the loom when it was all torn out. re did it all once, but i'm not entirely happy with it 2 years later and want to hide everything i possibly can.
I happened to recognize the style harness you have there. If I'm not mistaken it looks like you have a Kwik Wire setup, if you have any further questions give Gary a call. He happens to be my uncle He'll be happy to help you out, if he's at a show his boys Shawn and Cory should be there to help you out as well.
For the average guy who is not an auto electrican starting wire project can send a guy in the house for the bottle. Some times I wonder how these things even run after all that is done to gettum together.[/quote] I can definately relate. My sedan delivery was my first from scratch wiring attept and i had to take many breaks to think things through and i was almost certain when we hooked it up to the battery and tried everything it would let the smoke out but as luck would have no smoke and eveything worked.
Yeah that doesn't look half bad. What's with the yellow paint? Junkyard parts? Just get a test light and you'll knock it out. The best part of installing a wiring harness has got to be tearing the old one out. Now *THAT* was satisfying!!!
Yes, it looks exactly the same as mine does right now ('46 Ford), except mine is an all black EZwire kit... Should have most of it all neat and tucked by EOD tomorrow/today. I just took it one system at a time... Engine, steering column, Dash, headlights Lights, horn, fuel pump, taillights... So far so good.
As an auto elec I seen plenty worse, my Dad recently bought a 36 coupe ten minutes into the 12hr interstate drive home no head lights, check under the dash on the side of the road in the rain and found the headlights had been wired with speaker wire. That was a fun road trip.
Ah yes--they read that book: YOU ,TOO CAR WIRE A CAR! Can't tell you how many jobs I've seen like that--the math is this:50 /60 year old car--divided by 5 /6 owners--multiply be 1 mile of blue / red /black (pick one--maybe all) --add heat= 1*****-UP MESS!
I had Joe's Joke (Prince of Darkness)for wiring in the Jag..and worked on others. I ripped it out..threw in in the garbage...of course the garbage can has smoked ever since.. The amazing part is how Joe Lucas ever got all that smoke in the wires in the first place.. Why curse the darkness..? Rip it out..!
