I was wondering if any of you guys have been watching a movie and then suddenly get caught up with what cars are in the movie from that era..?My GF was watching Public Enemy with Johnny Depp when I came in from the garage and kinda walked by the tv only to look down and say..Whoa,look at that Model A,OMG is that a '32 Ford..?She kinda looked at me and said.."Uh,you going to do that through the WHOLE movie ..again.?!?!?" Then I wondered...where and the hell did they get that many Model A's for a movie like that..?

Yeah it's pretty frustrating actually. There have been QUITE a few movies where i've missed key plot elements or hell even the entire movie because i was looking at all the cars parked ont he side of the street etc. Oh well, it's a curse right? blame it on the sickness.

  7. Damn all I ever DO is scope out the rides and threads in 30s, 40s and 50s films.

My favorite films come from this era.

  8. I saw that Johnny cash movie when it first come
to the movies, there was a car in the back
ground of a shot with a hubcap slightly fallen
off showing a late model mag.... I was so
disappointed with their attention to detail,
that I still haven't watched the whole thing thru!!!

As a plus I enjoy the movies of the 40s-50s and 60s. But most of the time I am scouting out all the neat rides of that era. I can pick out and A.D. Chevy truck/panel/suburban even if it only appears for a split second.

I always get facainated when thinking of a vehicles time span, the stories they could tell.

On a lighter note, Mrs Trucked Up and I were in a local restaurent that has a lot of local pictures hanging on the wall taken in the late 40s and early fifties. Most are from a huge farmers type market and there always seems to be many A.D trucks/panels in them. In my most serious manner (when it comes to trucks) I commented to her about my curiousty as to where so many of those trucks might be today. And without any hesitation she replied for me not to worry as they were probably in our garage............................:D

I saw October Sky the other day with my kids and my 10 year old daughter is pointing out scenes with a truck like mine. The God Father has some cool rides in it also.

  12. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is just the place for that sort of viewing. Good stuff.

In the movie "A Christmas Story" where the kid finally has enough of being bullied and is pounding away on him it shows a '37 Terraplane in the background that looks like mine.

I have no idea what you're talking about...just kiddin'.

My wife and I love the '30s/'40s/'50s movies. Whenever there's a scene with lots of old cars, she always says, "Oooooh...car-show!" LOL.

Thank goodness for Tivo. I always pause and check out all the cars, trying to identify as many as possible. Sometimes I see cars like I've worked on in the past. The wife just shakes her head. She knows its a terminal thing.

  24. To me, what is a dead giveaway as to when the pic was made is the cars. Vintage movies rarely have as many roadsters, coupés and convertibles, as that is not what the average Joe had 'back in the day'.

As to how they got sooo many Model 'A's in the Public Enemy flic, there are two reasons, first, there really are a lot around here (Chicago), and they have been known to film the same car over and over, using different camera angles and other Hollywood trickery.

Some of the TV shows from the 50's have alot of cool cars in the background, too. I've been watching the entire series of "M Squad" on DVD.

All of the main cars are mid - late 50's Fords, Lincolns, Edsels, or Mercs. Hmmm.....sponsered by Ford??? It looks like the driving scenes were filmed right out on the street, (in Chicago, I think). Haven't seen any hot rods yet, but you'll see all of the cars and trucks from the 50's and older.....Even saw a 57 Cameo in one episode.

The biggest reason I watch old stuff, many times I have music on the puter with Pandora surfin the H.A.M.B. and diggin all the vintage stuff, buildings, signage, furniture, clothing, babes, and really see some excellent examples of cool. I have been in the vintage business for the last 30 years so that is my gig. Fun! ~Sololobo~
