A while back I was telling another HAMBER (f1- freak) that I had been looking for a 49-51 Mercury 2 door to build. He told me that he remembered seeing one many years ago on a farm located in the Oklahoma Panhandle on a riverbank on his uncle's old farm. Yesterday, I was up in that area and decided to see if by some chance it was still there. What I found was both amazing and a bit depressing. The Merc was gone but there were about 50 old cars from the 1920's and 30's lining the riverbank, all anchored in the ground and tied together with a steel cable running through them. Although they were all pretty much beyond hope, I had a good time looking through all the remnants and snapping off a few photos. The latest model I found was a 49 Hudson and the earliest, i think, was an early 30's Chevrolet sedan. From what I could tell, it looks like all the drive trains, wheels, hoods, etc. must have been removed prior to planting them in the embankment.
I've seen this around a few riverbanks here in Texas, but most of the cars were only exposed at the top of the roof lines and you really couldn't tell much about what was beneath the ground. I would really like to know more about the history, specifics, and methods of accuiring all the cars that took place back then if anyone happens to know.

If you think those are beyond hope then you need to start traveling the northeast and see what we call hopeless.

Amen to that, brother! The Northeast has mastered the art of making cars disappear - sometimes before our very eyes. When we say we are going to the junkyard, we really mean that. The stuff here is just so badly decomposed. Depressing, very depressing.

    Hey Caddy-O,

I am glad you enjoyed the trip. It is sad and cool to see these car in real life. Pictures just don't do it justice.

Fascinating photos of an early soloution for erosion control. IMHO, it rivals the Cadillac ranch for "car art" because of the year range of cars there and because it was never intended to be "art". Must have been great fun walking a****st the cars there-what a site..

While a lot of them have been picked clean, I'm really surprised at how many still have fenders, doors, headlights, etc.
A few good cowl and roof sections too.

  9. That truck cab looks about 1000 times better than the A "cab" I wired together today. It still has paint and the business name on it - I'd have at least snagged the door to hang up in the garage.

As dry as it looks there I wouldn't be surprised if you dug out the frames and found them usable enough to build a car with. One man's beyond hope is another man's ideal project -

  10. Thats ****s wish you could get some of them!

I've seen that type of erosion control in the backwoods of the carolinas as well. I shot this pic back in May.

  12. I'll have to get out to my in-laws and snap some pics of the rodeo ring made from junkers on their sides with mattresses wired to the inside.

Hey Caddy-O, next time you get up here in my neck of the woods give me a call and I can show you around. There are a few places around Guymon with cars sitting around.

Looks like they are coming out of the ground, like a layer of sedimentary vehicles just under the earths surface...

  15. In the first pic, 41 Ford (you can only see the guard) 37 Ford and a 35-6 (?) Ford. Further along is about a 46 coupe. Thats all I can pic.

Yeah I'm kinda surprised at how nice the half of the car out of the ground looks.

Based on what I've read here, not from personal experience, I wonder if there's much of any car left under the soil?

That's a killer pic, if you have any more please post em!!

definitely good for something, even if it is only as donor material. You might be suprised what is left below ground. Up here in our neck of the wood, there would be nothing left, but down there...

I've seen the same thing in Kansas and Utah.
These cars were cabled together in a dry wash in Utah----very dry soft sandy ground. Going to try and dig out the 5 window for fun on the next western vacation.

God - does anyone else get an emotional pang from seeing them all strung together like corpses?
As another New England transplant, I'll second that emotion: We'll take all your junk cars.
