Everybodys favorite "traditional" hotrod, Loaded, just sold at BJ

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hillbillyhell, Jan 21, 2006.

  1. Read the articles on this car. The money went into every hand made part. Those look like Model A doors - guess again - positioned the rear body and cowl and then hand built doors to fill the gap. Those old Hildebrant wheels? No way, custom made. Just an old trunk out back? Oh, why bother, if you have to explain it .................

I wonder if it would have brought more if it had last year's GNRS trophy win in it's resume?
People with bucks usually buy a pedegree and this car came in second place at the (big) dog show.

Whoever bought it got a "used car" as far as show cars go and if he (she?) bought it to drive,? they are going to have to spend several thou more making it actually road worthy.
Things like putting at least one shackle on the front spring so the suicide front end's wishbones or clevises don't get stress cracked and broken. Little stuff like that...

It's only in the past few years, the "Gold Chainer Era", that "customized" cars have sold for more than peanuts on the dollar at all.

Oh, Did I say I liked the car a lot? It's just out of my league too, like so many other's here, although some here could have been the buyer...

  3. How much do you think you could get for a LS6 Chevelle Conv. if Kirk started having Billetproof auctions?

Wow, lotsa varied reactions here, but that's to be expected I suppose. As soon as I saw that go across the block last night I felt the same way, $190k was a bargain for that car, but everything's relative. I paid $65k for my house so is a car worth 3x as much as my house? Depends whose wallet's open. If you step back and take in the whole BJ auction it makes you a little queasy to think that a '70 Chevelle convert. can bring $1.15 million, no matter where it was driven or what it did but a car built entirely by hand, a "one-of-one" brings $190k. Yeah, back to reality for us poor working slobs, everyone be glad for what you have before the big $ car buyers push the market where only they can reach it. Shit, I'm 33 and it took me forever to find a '30s coupe I could beg, borrow, steal, and trade enough to own.

Both cars are gorgeous! I can't believe with bogus Hemi GTX's going for over 100K, that Loaded didn't bring at least half a mil.... Are we so much smarter, better attuned or perhaps weirder that everyone else that we "get it" when so many others dont..... I'm newer at this traditional rod game than most of you, but Loaded just jumps right out at me.

  6. I may be all wet, but I figured they had way less than 100K in it. When you start farming everything out things go crazy fast. Guess I look at it from the point of view that I do everything myself. Looked like they done or were able to do most of it themselves from the pics of the build in their shop.

  8. the BJ auction is just like any other auction...there are deals, and someone pays too much for something. it all depends on the crowd that went to the auction..the BJ auction crowd are there for the muscle cars,...it's not the place to sell a hot rod. even Boyd's stuff doesn't bring the big bucks there

that car (loaded) , properly promoted at the correct venue would possible bring a LOT more money...the owner just took it to the wrong place

a couple years ago a bought a NICE `32 ford firewall at a farm auction...for $2... i was the only bidder on it..no one else there knew what it was. same thing applies here

Really?? What makes it a "gold chain street rod"? Is it the shiny paint? The fact that it cost more than $2000 and 10 cases of beer to build?

Unless it's a no reserve auction, which, oh yeah, it was. And no, whoever pout it up for auction was NOT happy. Sure it's a chance you take, but if I were in Royces' shoes, I'd have been expecting much better money too, given all the media this car has gotten, not to mention the awards.

Stick up your ass much? If "Loaded" isn't at least as much "in the tradition" as 95% of the stuff that gets discussed here, then apparently I and a lot of other people don't understand "traditional". Does the actual auction price bear discussion? Yeah, as far as I'm concerned it does. There are a number of people that build these cars for a living, and when something that nice tanks at Barrett Jackson, it matters.

Wow, a lot of naysayers here.

Imagine if Royce had to sell the car to pay medical bills or something. Then it would be a tragedy that he lost money on it. Maybe he didn't build it just to sell. Who knows? He's not here to explain what happened, so this is all just internet banter.

I will say, anyone who doesn't get excited about that car, or some parts of it at least, must be dead. It's absolutely a benchmark car.

Hey buddy....I just say what I heard..example..I have a good friend who made the great 8 in Detroit....spent $ 600,000....And I know he spent that.
no biggie.....he has the bread and he wanted too.He is a great guy and does not have an ego.
As for the Royce car....I ASSUME he has that much into it.....I have seen the car several times and has one-off EVERYTHING.
WHY???......cause he can.And yes...I think ROYCE GETS IT....just like Geo Poteet and many others.
If I had the resources to do a car like that, would I ? ....yer GODDAMN right I would.
    It would be a dream!!!
Until that day comes,I will keep buying lottery tickets.

    be happy.....life is too short.

    Agreed.

You don't even know what you're talking about.

B-J only takes NO RESERVE cars for this auction. And , no, whoever put it up for auction wasn't happy......I seen them and they were sick as they turned to walk away. I know the feeling all too well, I sold cars at auctions 3 times a week from 1992 to 2003.....I've had my share of baths.

  14. Yeah but it would have been nice too keep it a while and "enjoy" it in trade for what you're potentially going to lose ;)

That said, guys that have that kind of money aren't stupid, and you have to figure they considered they could lose a huge chunk of it if things don't go just right.....but then again it was a hell of a testament to the quality of car the "shop" can turn out.....so I guess you'd have to chalk it and the awards up to advertising.

    "be happy.....life is too short"

You're so right there bro, the years are clicking by like months now.

  15. Far be it for me to disagree with anyone on a hot rods value........:D
BUUUUT-I feel a lot os folks in the hobby are gonna have ta realize that their car is just that-"their car".

Not everybody is gonna "see" the virtue of the amount of details and stying cues put into the ride offered up at an auction.

Also I beg to differ on the "deal" a car like that is at 190K.....Hey that is not exactly lunch money -and if they had to have a lot more than that to sell it -then-I call that being a little unrealistic at the least.
A lot of folks in this hobby assume that they are not getting what their cars are worth.....lets be honest here 190 K is a wad of cash and a lot of cool shit can be built for a 1/5 of that amount.....I personally get a little peeved at the shop labor some places charge-:) if 120.00 an hour is charged -sure that can eat up a Hundred thousand dollars- quicker!
I guess what Im trying to say is this: if your expectations are unrealistic to start with, then you should not be suprised to be dissapointed in the end.

I really liked the RPU......but when the car first came out we heard that Royce was gonna show it for a bit then drive the piss out of it. What happenned to that? It would have been cool to see the car driven! Instead it was treated like any other high end car. What a shame!

As for the price...I've seen cars half as nice sell for more.

I wouldn't attempt to explain the economics of owning, building, and selling cars. I don't think I understand it all that well myself.

A couple of years ago, though, it occurred to me that a car can be many different things to different people:

    Transportation
    Tool
    Income producer
    Investment (usually poor)
    Lifestyle statement
    Prestige enhancer
    Creative act
...and, I'm realizing from the auction scene, game tokens.

Many of these functions are mutually exclusive. I view my cars as creative acts, and much of what I get from them is the satisfaction of seeing my ideas realized and the car improved, at least from my point of view. For that reason I accept that the things I do to the car, for the most part, are at odds with the idea of the car as investment. I'm willing to pay for my thrills.

That said, I sold my '36 at auction yesterday. I didn't get back nearly what I had invested, but it was still a pretty good price and will help fund the next project. My car was at Russo and Steele rather than Barrett-Jackson, but there are more similarities than differences between the two auctions. I noticed that both were dominated by muscle cars, and that the prices generated by hot rods and customs were much lower than those for the top muscle cars. I think that the guys trading in muscle cars are a different breed than us; for them, performance options and rarity are paramount, then authenticity, then condition. Our type of car would be difficult for most of them to quantify.

Altogether, it was an interesting experience. On to the next one.

I like watching the B-J thing just to see how stupid people with a lot of money are!!
150k for a hemi clone...hell how many can we build for that cash???
didn'r see many rat-rod driver cars go over the block.....sad thing is 99.9% will never see the street..and yea things like that auction can and will drive up the prices of most cars...every clown that wants to make a buck on his car will quote" well at the BJ auction it went for XXXXX"
Man if I wanted to sell any of my cars at that stupid auction it would cost me a ton of cast to get it to their standards, but then ya coulcn't have any fun driving it...
I think of that auction like an art auction..kind of fun to watch but not to practical...
Give me a driver any day!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Mench

Oh I have a 71 chevelle convt and 39 chevy street rod,if anyone want to give me 150k for both...what a deal!!! just funnin....

    Keep the bottom dirty!!!!!

What alot of people neglected to say is...

Some of these cars were bought as an investment. Sure, these guys cannot change the oil, but they do know that in 10 years, there will only be the same amount or less of the particular car they bought. Rich People don't get richer by making dumb investments.

The hot rods don't pull as much, because there always will be something newer and cooler the following year.

I cannot honestly say what that RPU should have got, but it seems to me, it was worth 190,000 to some asshole last Saturday. Cars are only worth what what someone is willing to pay.

I think the TV has made people forget how much 190,000 really is....

I am a fan of this car. I didn't realize it had a name. It was in Rodder's Journal in two consecutive issues. One showed it all in bare metal the other showed it all painted and chromed. Gorgeous in every detail. I was disappointed in the price it got. Yes $190K is a ton of cash. But it was my reaction to the relative pricing of all the other crap that was sold. A 2003 Pontiac Sunfire went for $70K. This car was more than 2.7 times cooler than a Pontiac Sunfire, even if it did have a bodykit, a supercharger, and an autographed guitar from that Van Halen guy. And it was cooler than whatever silly Mopar muscle car somebody thinks is worth 1 or 2 million.

A painting of George Washington went for like $21 Million Sunday. I'd rather have the hot rod.

  28. What would keep someone from having a "ringer" buddy in the audience to "buy" the car below an agreed price? I would pay 6% to keep from loosing my ass;) .
