IMG_3812.jpeg IMG_3811.jpeg Put a big “DONE” stamp on this. I got the column installed and connected for good today. The new wheel is beautiful, the original looked nice I thought but this makes it look really shabby. I had a minor issue getting the steering shaft aligned properly, the new column is a slightly different angle as the column drop is about an inch shorter. That led to the geometry of the steering shaft being way different, which lead to all kinds problems. There are 3 U joints and a support bearing, I ended up having to shorten the intermediate shaft as it wanted to set further into the U joint just forward of the support bearing, which bound the U joint. An inch off it and a little adjustment of the angle of the column at the floor got that solved.
An added bonus of the new column and switch is that I now have functional 4way flashers. Not to mention that the brake lights and turn signals work each time, every time.
The bottom line was $189 for the column, $323 for the wheel and $40 for one new U-joint. I’d “borrowed “ one when I put the new Borgeson power steering box in the T’bird.
So, new column a steering wheel, $452. Having reliable, visible brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers, priceless. I think it was a bargain.
