You might be able to use Purple Hornies That would solve the welding problem because they bolt right to the collector and they are fairly cheap. But best of all you could tell people you have Purple Hornies. [IMG]

Three inch collectors are pretty large for a small block motor. On the other hand, a two inch system is probably not too small in most cases. If you insist on making it zoomier, you could replace it with 2 1/2 tubing, but it is probably just to make your unit stand up. You have to be making quite a bit in excess of 300 hp to justify the bigger pipes.

  4. Von T...........if your running a small block then the 2 1/2 pipe should work well.........when you start to get into the 3 and 3 1/2 inch pipe it will hurt your bottom end pull unless your willing to run some tall gearing in the back........usually a big block will take the bigger pipe. Sounds like a nice ride!!........if you get the chance, throw some shots up on the HAMB.........love to see it!! [IMG]

  5. Its all about where you want the power gain..You got the correct headers those should work well.On my 65 Mustang,I ran 2 1/4" from the Tri Y headers back through some old Thrush 15" glasspacks, boy did that car sound nasty!!it ran awesome too, I also ran a balance tube between the two pipes.289/302's work well with the smaller diameter pipe.Unless you run 4.11s or higher..

  6. Von I'm looking for a 64 Fairlane...I'm going to find one soon...I've always wanted to do one up...these full size Fords of mine just dont get it...

  7. SHIT!! Is that the same car?!! DAMN!!

  8. You dont need a much bigger engine just a stroked 302 will do...Hell you could even build that 289 up!! but the 347 Stroker is lethal! were talking numbers in the 500+ HP range all in a mill that weighs 500Lbs!! Big Blocks are cool but they are heavy boat anchors.Small block that shit..Its always more impressive to see a small mill pull the wheels off the ground than a big one.

  9. Sweet!! Man I love that car!!

    Yeah! Nice car!
Clean styling is never outdated, and the stylist for that one deserves a pat on the back!

I had a 68 Mustang with a 289 as a first car. No headers but twin muffs from a 440 Plymouth cop car bolted either side of the tranny and 2.25" chrome "sneaker" pipes angling out to just ahead of the rear tires made a sweet sound I remember to this day! I always liked the sound of a SBF...
I would get up at 6 am and take the looooong way to work just to listen to that thing burble when I lifted off the gas!
I'm a Chevy guy now...but I have fond memories of my days in a FORD.

LOVE the car Von tinkler... [IMG]

Hey Von Tingler, Marcus is right 289/302s don't like big dia. exhaust. I ran pretty much the same setup as Marcus did on my '67 289 Mustang. Hedman Headers, 2.25 tubing after the reducers with a 2.0 balance pipe, 2.25 Turbo mufflers with some under the car turndowns. It ran really strong that way. They like having a little back pressure and velocity I guess.

Here's another vote for 2-1/4" pipes/mufflers & 2-1/2" for anything AFTER the mufflers. The SBF likes the H-pipe on the street.

I have SuperComps on my comet. Had a 289 in it. The 331 is almost ready to fire. Its just two straight peices of 2.5" pipe behind the headers, then the mufflers and turndowns. Someday I would like to put tailpipes on it. Flowmaster makes some mandrel bent pipes for the mustangs, pt# 15807, for $100. With a little trimming they'll fit. I also but a system for my dads '67 289 powered mustang. Hooker headers, then a homemade x-pipe, mufflers, then the flowmaster tailpipes. Made the x-pipe with cheep mandrel bends from JCWhitney.

If you are just going to put 2" back on it, why did you put on those headers? They are way too much of a pain in the ass to justify unless you use everything to its potential. Go ahead and put 2.5" on it.

A mild SBF can't effectively utilize 2.5" exhaust. It will lower your exhaust gas velocity & scavenging. Unless you're going to consistently wring it up to 5K+, stick with 2-1/4" & add a 2" H-pipe.

Ditto. I've stayed out of this one so far cuz most of the fellas are giving good advice but in my experience getting the highest flow near the engine is best for SBF. If you can give the exhaust gasses an easy place to go right out of the head and then apply a little backpressure further down the system that is the best.

I'm with Ernie. Go 2 1/4 and use an H pipe.

  19. Well....I wrote it way up top...Just making sure he saw it!! hahaha!!! Actually you should run no exhaust straight headers instead!!Just Kidding it will really fall on its face... Funny story I went to the drags with the Mustang and unhooked the headers and it ran like 7/10th's slower... I ran a 3.55 one legger rear end street tires through mufflers and ran a best of 15.10 at like 94 MPH ,mild built 302 C4 trans.
