Flowmasters were made in my home town in the 80's They were in a industrial park called industry west off Todd Drive. Before they were there the streets for the industrial park were paved years before all the buildings got built . In about 1983 a kid painted a line across the road and drove 1/4 of a mile a dozen times in a 73 Datsun Station wagon and averaged it out . Were that spot was a piece of rebar was stuck in the chain link fence sticking up . Many many late night street drags were held there . The rebar was there well after flow Master moved in . It was there for 25 years . How do I know this ?? Well my mom had a 73 Dastun Wagon and my buddies mom had a pinto and Mom's odometer was more accurate and we needed to settle who's car was faster . The pinto lost. I got in trouble for taking the Datsun out at night . Anyway there was a makeshift drag strip in front of Flowmaster that they never new about . My first chevy ( 61 impala) got gl*** packs installed at Johny Franklin's by John himself . He was involved in the Milner coupe . Sounded great . Had Super Traps on a Camero in the late 80's . Dad had Smitty mufflers on his 49 and 55 . I barely recall the 55 . Likely the first car I rode in. Was all they had in 63 when I was born
That was usually one more step then I took, until I made a few donations to local law enforcement. Those donations cost more then mufflers or gl*** packs did. I also learned how to watch for cops, and to drive accordingly.
My dad used to run the exhaust out the back on his drivers. 2.25" with Smithy's then later he began to run resonators instead of mufflers. I remember that he had a 6 cylinder car once that he ran straight pipes that ended in megephones. That car sounded sweet and I am not usually impressed by inline motors with splits. This would have been later '50s into the '60s if era is important to this thread.
I punched a couple holes in my Mom's '66 Lemans' muffler to make it sound like the "Cool Kids'" cars... didn't end well...
I drilled an 1/8" hole in front of each muffler in my mom's '66 Buick. Made it snap crackle and pop when you let up on the gas. She was not a happy camper.
