The old style cable operated ones were cheap !!!! There's a muffler out there with an automatic flap inside of it. Stand on the loud pedal and it is straight thru, creep thru the neighborhood and its quiet as a mouse. Think it by cherry bomb but I can't be sure .
They were only $200 bucks on jegs.com(on sale) manual or used cable cutouts you could probably find for cheaper. but the ease of a ****on when you see a cop ...Priceless!
Please consider 2.00" and as long a Thrush smooth perforated inner pipe gl***pack that you can run down each side. And do run full length tailpipes out the back. Because you only have a 289" engine. Look around at what the 283"and 292" SBC guys are running for examples. pdq67 PS., I've even welded two Thrushes end to end to make them longer. They are totally see-through with nothing in the way of the exhaust.
You will be glad you ran them out the back,in Texas in the summer you may want to roll down the windows if they exit ahead of the rear wheels the exhaust will get ****ed in the car Not a good thing.I run 22" Cherry Bombs with my 302 SBF and 2 1/4" and love the sound also the smaller diameter case will be easier to work with clearance wise.
LESS IS MORE ! do not go with 3" , youll be wasting valuable room 3" tubing takes up alot of space and unless your bender guy is gonna ride in it youll probly end up with a dam rattle that will drive you crazy ! 2" / 2.25 " is best for the 289 , the mufflers are your preference for tone .. but do run them out the back or side . Ex that exit under the car only create condensation that contributes to early rusting of floorboards and exhaust smell in the ****pit. Ed
The mufflers you're referring to are reproductions of the extremely rare 1970 Pontiac GTO "Driver Controlled Exhaust" option. It is also known as Vac*** Controlled Exhaust or "VOE".
Wow! never seen that...Neat!, does it open the muffler right up or just move a door to allow a little more flow?
This may sound like a Polish answer but Yeah! It does open the muffler up for more flow and noise but is not a true open exhaust because the exhaust flow still runs through a confined space. Here is the interior dash control......
No, Actually I was referring to these http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=vt But yours are way ****ing cooler !!!! God Pontiac had some neat stuff
Huh! Never seen those before. They're probably cheaper than those Pontiac re-pops. The Pontiac ones sell for $900.00! Well that's when the cops step in and give you a ticket for exceeding the local noise limits. Face it, we're gonna lose no matter how much better our mouse trap is. Oh and I'm allowed to use the term "Polish".... I are one!
Wow! that thing is trick! must be Factory since its on the build sheet, or are they a get it later dealer add-on? If thats Factory, Props to Pontiac on that! the Dynoflow one is kinda lame you cant control it... its just optimizing back pressure/flow. Ive never really been a big fan of anything Pontiac but I might have to look harder if they had trick things like that...
It was a "check the box" option that was killed off a couple of months after being offered. I heard the reason but I can't remember why.
