Can you post up or PM me how to get to the old Claypool tunnell? I was through Superior this weekend and was trying to figure out how to get onto the old highway. All the roads I could find seemed to be barricaded locked and no tresspassing signs??

  2. Sure. You get there by foot, cannot drive there. Park on the Superior side of the big tunnel and hike across the hill to the old hiway. Then, hike the old hiway until you get there. not sure of distance, perhaps a 1/2- 3/4 mile each way. bring camera and water

About the only place to get a quick glance of it from the main hwy is at the south end of the big bridge if you look east. I drove on this hiway for over 20 years before I found it myself by just looking around. Did not know it existed before I 'found' it.
It is probably best that not too many know of it. It is fairly well preserved. There is some graffitti but, could be a lot worse. Let's leave it for future generations.

  3. This Friday and Saturday, I am hosting my 4th annual Apache County Motorsports Days in St Johns.
It is a great time to get out of the heat, if you live in the deserts, and make the super nice drive up to St Johns in Apache county!
St Johns is less than an hour east of Show Low- take hwy 60 out of Show Low about 9 miles, then left at the "Y" onto hwy 61 to St Johns. The show is at the city park and easy to find. Here is the event flyer

The event kicks off Friday eve 5-9 at Frankie's diner and cruisin main st. There will be music, hot rods, antiques and food specials.

you can park in the grass under large trees or in the street which is blocked off for the event.
We will have a burn out contest agin this year plus a salsa contest, great music, tasty food, slow drags and more. Come and join us!

  7. It's a pleasure. The St Johns show in the high country went well and had 4 cars enter the burnout contest. Everyone had a good time. On the way back to the Phoenix area, 3 of us in our own cars, started to hike into the canyon area but it was too close to dark and we ended up barely seeing much because of that but, we tried.
We will likely resume our exploratory hikes in October. Sept is pretty full with other stuff to do.

  8. This car has been sitting there for many years in Arizona and I have driven by it more times than I can count but, today was the first time, I pulled over and made the short walk over to look at it and take some pics.

Speaking of Fort Auto Parts....in Huachuca City....

Apparently they are selling cars. I heard about the situation from a guy who's involved with the yard. About 400 cars, $500-1500 each, no dickering. I'll see if I can get more info. And no, you don't get to wander around the yard, you get to make an appointment to look at a specific car that's on "the list".

We might be able to make a hike on the 27th.

I'm very likley brining the coupe to Cars in the Park. There should definately be a HAMB meet at the show.

  23. This old truck we found also around Feb is now not there. It's gone forever, probably gone to scrap. What a shame to see something sitting for so long taken by someone who does not own it and crushing it.
Please leave stuff alone for others to enjoy and explore for years and decades to come. I hope that posting this pic did not lead to this poor old truck getting taken and smashed for beer money. What a shame.

I'll be joining you in the future. Still seems warm enough leaving earlier than 7 would make sense.

Yesterday was a good show @ Sanderson Ford.

I agree with Steve completely!! It seems in our haste & excitement to share with everyone what we have found, we may have contributed to these old wrecks being vandalised or possibly taken from their resting place to be scrapped. In any & all future posts we will not disclose where anything we have found is located. We have also recieved requests from people to get them a part off of one of these vehicles or tell them where its located. This we will not do. For the most part, these are wrecks down in the bottom of a steep ravine & most likely someone died in this car. We will not disturb the resting place of these vehicles. We will take pictures to share but thats it.. Please do not ask for parts or locations, we will not answer.

Damn glad to hear this! Too much of history dissapears everyday. I wish Americans could look at antiqueties from the standpoint OF their history rather than scrap value...

Thanks Guy's!!! We are just a bunch of friends that enjoy getting out & hiking the old highways & byways in the state. We like finding old mines, bridges, tressles, wrecks & machinery. I just hope & pray we didnt contribute to the loss of any of these old historical treasures. We will continue to share what we find but wish that nobody disturbe them. Let them rest in peace. They deserve it.
