Has anyone made their own extended cab? I'm a tall guy and I love my '86 SWB Silverado but I'd love to have an extneded cab. I'm just dreamin' at this point but it seems like a custom extended cab might look pretty cool, if done right. Perhaps a chop and an extend. :)

I can't find the pictures, but several years ago I did 2 of them for Speedway Mtrs. using their extended 34 cab. The first one was Yellow with a Chevy mtr and the second one was Red with a Ford mtr and was hauled around by Ford Performance for a couple of years. They sold the yellow truck but the last I heard the red truck was in their museum. Wish I still had pictures.

Not necessarily looking for mid-80's Chevies. Looking for creative customs where people extended, and maybe chopped, the cabs of their existing trucks. Older trucks preferred.

30-31 Model A Sedan sectioned 18" chopped 4". My unfinished interpretation of an idea stolen from Posies'. (Thunderroad). I just hope it turns out as cool.

I would have expected some 40's and 50's Chevy and Ford PU's. The 30's look awesome. Love the dirt tracking one!

All have are some drawings and a collection of parts but it is in the works and progress reports should be in the works soon. All I'm going to say at this time is long bed AD Chev frame, short box and cab stretched to make up the difference.

  22. If you really want an extended cab squarebody Chevy, they exist, were custom built on a limited scale by an outside company, similar to the late Firebird/Camaro convertibles. Some info on them if you search at Chevytalk.org -

Or just get a LWB, a short bed, an extra cab and a set of Suburban rear doors and go to work. Is a lil easier than combining the contours of some of the 30s-40s era cabs.

or just the quarter panel? that's how I did my 59....found a cheap 58 suburban, swiped two feet of it just behind the door.

I built a 32 Ford pu ,chopped the top 5 inches channeled it 5,drove it a couple years,I am 6 ft tall and needed more leg and head room so I cut the cab and frame in two.Extended it 12 inches and it was perfect.I custom fabricated the box like a ute pu grafting it to the cab.I cut down a pair of doors for filler pannels. It was purple and magenta candy. It was featured in Street rodder mag and street rod pickups when I had it. Sold it to a guy in Pontiac Michigan,he was telling everyone there he built it .I wonder where it is now.

Maybe this thread should have been called BAD *** Trucks.
It is turning into something more interesting now.

That would be cool, they didn't make an 86 gm extended cab. I was considering it a while ago. I didn't do it but it looked do-able. a suburban roof skin might help.
I was going to cut the roof skin 2" or so in from the outside around the edges... make a cut 1" behind the doors, slide the rear back and fill in the side panels with door skin and other parts borrowed from another cab. It wasn't going to have side windows.
You'll probably have to stretch the frame under the cab so the fuel tanks and everything else fit right.
The left and right rail of an 86 chevy frame are not identical. it fooled me first time making a pickup box trailer. watch out for it.
I have alot of pipe dreams but I actually do go beyond just figguring and build something.
The 76 ford extended cab was a 3/4 ton supercab 2 wheel drive and now has a half ton 4x4 suspension and drive train in it. I did this instead of stretching the cab
I did it like factory but it was never offered this way

That blue and white Ford is what I'm talking about. I just can't believe there haven't been a bunch of diy extended cab jobs done on 50's and 60's pickups.
