I'm doing a 32 chassis now that uses the flat front cross member from Wiemer moved ahead 1 inch over stock, 5 inch dropped forged axle, Posie super low spring, 37-40 Ford spindles with the arms dropped 1 inch and hairpins. Gets the front nice and low while still retaining it's drive ability. Does require a flat bottom radiator which is listed in Johnson's catalogue.
3.5 " longer wheelbase. My own hood but hardly any longer than a stock hood because it is vertical, not leaning forward to match the body rake. Front of hood also 3/4 " lower than stock. 32's looked humped up in front to me. Moved the W/S posts back about an inch too. Custom one off radiator. Cools good. Best Bitch'n award and 1st place Deuse Doin's Goodguys S E Nationals. PS; Run skinny tires on your own shit.
Krylon, You really need to get help so you can post pictures of your many projects. I always check out your posts and would like to see photos. Ron
Instructions for posting photos in post #1. You'll laugh when you see how easy it is. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/how-to-post-images-on-a-thread.922350/
My picture posting problem has something to do with how my computer is configured. My friend Gary has tried repeatedly to walk me thru it and I've done it the way it's explained but I experienced nothing but failure.
The bronze 5W you've posted and mentioned a few times is a modern style. From the doors forward it would not follow a 1940s or 1950s style build. I think you need to sit down and list out what types of features you like and determine how faithfully you want to follow a 1940s or 1950s style. You've kind of been all over the place in your various threads. Finding your own style is OK, too, but in that case I'd get less hung up on asking how something was done in X era and concern myself more with if it looks like what I like or not.
Aww, that's just Hank. He doesn't know what he wants, but he wants it to be authentic. Unless it's not.
A guy has to dream! He can do anything he wants as long as he doesn't put drawer knobs in the grille. And whitewalls!!!
I've built a few cars over the years and when I started a project I always had a game plan that I very rarely deviated from. Changes during the build process get expensive. Oh Ya that's why we have swap meets.
That doesn't deter Hank. He even bought a set of Ardun heads which he said he isn't going to use now. I think he's secretly a millionaire.
The ones that make you stop and look almost always have the axle ahead a little. The ones that make you stop and say,"...but WTF...?" usually left everything where it always was. Never looks right.
The secret to moving the cross member forward, using a flat cross member, stretching the hood and using a shortened radiator is when you get done, nobody knows.
I has not come from hotrodding but dragracing, but I got a vision on older style on hot-rods and one day I saw Larry Rollers 3W coupe and decided build me a car. That car might look old but I learned me how it was build and it was not a total era correct ( as I might thought ) but it was not a street-rod either. At the moment I has bought almost all parts, and some stuff I bought wrong and sold it but now I has the style atleast in a very big picture what I like to do. That might sound odd to some ( build a car like that ) but I has start this project 'only' 1.5 years ago, and in that time I started I practically know nothing - so thanks to HAMB and friends to help me answer questions. And yes, I had bought some exclusive parts and sold it for less exclusive parts but I feel what I has now will fit my ideas. I has a mind set on many cars and now I'm hooked up on Tonys very fine flow on his coupe. That car keep me stay at the old drop at 3", but will I lean back pillars or will I use a flat cross in front that is not decided. A idea then lead to a question and maybe some answers and then sleep on and hopefully it leads to the style I'm after. The mock-up will be this winter and next year the body will be overseen by a pro. So I has time to think it over. I can do some flow on the car that fit my style that maybe Never was done in late 40's or early 50's but still use old speed parts. It's not a crime, or ? But I still can ask and I'm presuate all help here. Maybe it answers some, or ? -I guess I'm far from done here ;- )
Just checked radiator hole and the std 32 cross has 20" and the A cross had a hair over 19". I also note I cant move it forward ( ex 3/4" ) if not cut it up.
Hank: Hot rodders have slicing and dicing frames and components since the beginning to get the desired results. If I'd have been intimidated by cutting up old Ford parts 50 years ago I'd have ended up selling pencils on a street corner. Dam sure I've screwed up a few parts over the years but the risk was worth the reward. Just go for it!
Gary, I see many build old style look cars but its far from any era correct. Me, I like the old look and speed parts and history. But when it comes now in mock-up I guess thats a 'process' aswell ( but fun )
Yes, I've seen that cartoon. The guy that made the body built it for some publicity/attention (he had a glass body business.) It ended up in a Mad Max movie.
I hope this doesn't confuse the issue, but here are more 5 window photos. Some I would call 'traditional' and some not. https://hotrodcraft.com/theGarage/index.php?threads/5-windows.5/
