Has anyone ever extended a 6" hoop style steering arm by cutting it, welding it and gusseting it? My left front tire is hitting the drag link and I was going to move it out about 1- 1/8". This would give me the clearance that I need. But, if I do this will it affect the anything on my steering as far as turning the tires faster, etc. I know that the pivot point is changing and this is why I am asking. Brandon
It will have the effect of slowing your steering down. Why don't you just make a compleat new arm rather then making something that looks all cobbled up ?
I have to agree with Mr Evens on this one. Build a new arm or have someone build you one. It will slow the steering down and reduce your turning radius. Do you have the steering stops on the front end so that the wheels won't turn too far? When I first built my T and used a similar steering arm I didn't put the steering stops in and while the car could make a tight turn the left wheel would rub the steering arm. We fixed that by putting on steering stops.
1. Yes these arms have been extended for years. But, in most cases it is unnecesary, the only time your tire will touch the drag link is full lock in a parking lot. Lots of us have seen this on our cars 2. If you got the tiores turned that far on the road you are either in the ditch or trying to pass Sammy Swindell. See #1
