Just noticed, after learning about those "red dots" that some threads have an eyegl*** symbol. So what does that indicate?

Well that clears that up. How does the HAMB know I'm watching the thread when I'm not on the thread at the time?

Any threads that you mark to watch will have the eye gl***es. Those threads will be listed when you click on the lightning bolt flag. If the flag is red then you have watched threads that you haven't read yet. Sometimes I find a watched thread that wasn't picked up for some reason. I find it because the eye gl***es remind me. You can unwatch threads if you don't want to watch them any longer. You have to mark a thread for the HAMB to know you are watching it. I like this feature of the HAMB. I hope I explained it good enough.

Also, if you post on a thread you automatically watching the thread and you will get updates when new posts are added to the thread.

As Thor1 said you will automatically get notifications when you start or respond to a thread.
After you start a thread, you can unwatch it, then you won't get notifications. After I respond to a thread, I unwatch it and then turn around and watch it so I don't get the email notices. If that makes any sense.

But you can also turn the watch feature off so that you have to mark a thread you want to watch.
