Been working away the past couple weeks on a new project in the shop, but since I'm stuck in house watching a couple sick kids today figured I would start a thread on it. I decided a few months ago to sell my 63' GP and got an offer to trade for pretty solid 65' f100, so after exchanging a few emails the trade was a done deal.

Overall condition of the truck is pretty good but after driving it around for a couple weeks I came to the decision that I hated the interior. The truck had a sub frame from a mid 70's ford full size, I'm guessing Torino or Ranchero. But who ever did the sub frame used the a lot of the other parts from it in the truck, mainly the in the dash area.

So the hunt was on for a new dash, while I searched for a dash I went ahead and ripped out the old one and after getting a look at the wiring harness behind the dash I ripped it out too and a new harness from rebel was ordered.

Also to make the newer column fit they made a square box past the fire wall into the engine compartment and mounted the MC to it.

Seemed strange to me so I cut it out, patched the firewall, and re-mounted the pedal ***embly and MC.

    Finally a Clean Slate

So after some searching and coming up empty on my search for a original ford truck dash I came across a GMC truck dash from the early 60's for a decent price. Went ahead and got it and decided to see if I can make it fit and if not it would at least make some cool wall art for the shop. So with a little t******* the thing fit like a glove and I decided to go with it

Since its not an original dash figured I would give it the full custom treatment and make it stand out a little. So after a little fab and body work I dipped it in some new paint

I've also been wanting to try painting with candy paint so figured the dash would make a good place to try it out. So after acquiring some lace I went to town on it.

  10. Pretty sure you're just doing this to tease me- I'm trying to work out a dash swap for my Ford pickup and really want to see these pics.
I'll just say you did a great job cause it sounds good.

After test fitting the dash and new column, I wanted to find a way to get a little more interior room so after some research found out that I could find a later model seat that was a little thinner on the back rest and would bolt right up to the existing seat bracket. anything from 57-96 if I remember right. so went to the junk yard and found a good used basic bench out of a later model f150 that fit the bill. it was a little dirty but Ill get it cleaned up for now and after everything is put back on the road probably get it reupholstered to match.

Very cool project . I love what you did with the dash - good work , MUCH , MUCH better !!
My brother's 1st car was a '66 F100 Custom Cab shortbed . He misses that truck for sure . His was a 302 c-4 swapped truck , the rest was original , except for some old aluminum slot wheels with some big-ole fat back tires :) .

I'm watching this, I got a 65 short bed that I snagged last October. The trucks still in west Texas. I have not seen it yet, only pictures, but my brother in law told me all about it,and he was laughing as this one runs and drives.( unusual for me)
We will be heading south soon to pick it up,as soon as we see a few more doctors for Irene.
    Your dash looks great

Thanks guys, I feel I'm getting close to getting it back on the road, wiring is about finished up, had to pull the trans last week and put in a higher stall converter and installed a new shifter mount at the same time. Still have to hit the dash with my buffer and get it installed. I'll keep posting picks as it comes along

Subscribed...or watching....or whatever it is here on the HAMB now. Nice looking truck, but I'm glad that you pulled that horrid dash out. The GMC dash actually looks great. Is your gas tank still behind the seat? If so, you can gain some extra room by removing the tank and installing a mustang gas tank ('64-'72) between the rear frame rails. I just purchased a new one from ebay for $80, which included the sending unit which will work with the stock gas gauge. You have to trim the frame rails 3/8" on each side but it works great.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy on how the dash looks in there, haven't had it in since I painted it so we'll see. I did think about the mustang tank, but as of now I think the new seat is going give me the room I need.

My Dad bought a brand new '61 but had to go to Buffalo to purchase a camper for it.........a few days later......our family was off on our move to California from Ontario, Canada.
We had 7 days on the road with it visiting sights along the way. V8, 3 speed and not one problem along the way.
He sold it shortly after we arrived along with the camper.....mission accomplished!
Wonder what ever happened to it!

Good luck with your build....they were/are solid trucks!

Had to pull the headers to drop the trans the other day so figured I'd give them a little freshening up
