Here's a little constructive criticism from a fellow old car magazine photojournalist who understands what you're trying to do.

ONLY publish photos that are in FOCUS. If you have photos that are OUT of focus, fuzzy, or unclear, DO NOT publish them.

It's one thing to print a book about unfinished cars- that's going to bring controversy upon itself. All good.
But, as a staff member, PLEASE explain to the power(s) that be - out of focus photos are NOT helping at all. Just because the cars are a little rough around the edges does not mean the pics can be too.

That feature on the thrashed '56 Corvette with the really bad pictures and layout and the text about that tired old help with the hardened 70s polyglass tires dusting new Corvettes sounded A LOT like that weinie pull that Marcus posted yesterday. That story is my example of CONSISTANCY. What does a thrashed old Corvette with a middle aged dude driving have to do with the "scene"?

Why knock OSR when you KNOW that Flyrite has full page ads in each issue? When you condemn the book, you might as well be criticizing your fellow HAMB members for even appearing in the mag.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I don't think saying that is fair to you, OSR or the HAMB.

We all have our own opinions... and just because you advertise in a magazine doesn't make the magazine good. You advertise in a magazine because you want to hit your target audience... NOT because you believe in the magazine, the people who put it out or the content of said magazine.

I like Flyrite choppers, Jason's one hell of guy... and putting an ad in OSR is a smart move on his part because people buying that magazine probably loathe the inflated prices that Harleys go for... and can appreciate the value they get with a Flyrite chop...

but all of this does not make the magazine a "great" magazine in the eyes of all HAMB'ers... nor does it make their (OSR's)over-use of the term "RAT ROD" universally accepted.

    Or does it?
    Sam.

I just judge a magazine by how mant kustoms Ive never seen before that I can permanently log into my memory bank.Fortunately there are so many mags out there now that there is enouh room for every one. 1.People into real customs 2.People into real Hotrods 3.people that are into the "scene" but also heavy into cars.4.Latecomers that are taken with the scene(dress up,music tatoos, cars and all the other outside stuff)that dont know why any one would have a problem with the roof on the Chevy. Its all fine!!!

    Sam,
I suppose my main point is that any magazine that features HAMB members as either writers, photographers,or advertisers should be encouraged to grow, improve and thrive so as to continue to provide a forum where talent can be appreciated and advertising money be considered well spent.
I don't know enough about your skill and talent, but I would welcome an issue of OSR that ran a feature on you so I would have that chance...same for RaceFab,Killer,Spike,Shortbus, and many more....

I tried a few other titles and they just didn't seem to work,

    Hot Rat Rod
    Rat Rod & Custom
    Custom Rat Rodder
    Street Rat Rodder
    Popular Rat Rodding (been used)
    Rat Rodders Digest
    American Rat Rodder
    Super Rat Rodder
Rat Rod Builder (a personal fav)
    The Rat Rodder's Journal
    Car Crap (it could work!)

I guess OSR gets the monopoly on the name.

Despite what others would like I am a HAMBer and I have probably put more Hambers cars in my magazine than any other magazine and have even paid more than a few Hambers to write pieces- has any of that mattered- NOT AT ALL. Why is this the "holy grail"? Their bottom line is to make money just like any of the "coorporate" rags. When they start giving out free heart transplants and feeding starving children maybe we an all back off and let the goofy stuff go.

Since fake boobs are so great, I'm gonna go to Walmart and buy 2 goldfish and ductape the baggies on my chest. They feel the same, stay in place AND I'll have the added interest of fishies swimming around in there. Gives new meaning to Finding Nemo. [IMG]

  21. Some of you people need to relax, take a deep breath and stop taking yourselves so friggin seriously.

I think some of you are whingeing about is a big part of the character of the magazine.

Like the facts of life are that stuff actually exists, so where else are we going to see it if we can't make it to the events these guys attend? I always figured that's the purpose of magazines, to show the wider enthusiast and general population what's really happening in the big wide world of hot rodding.

Like how many years did I think that rodding in the US was all pro built cars and only 32 and 33/4 Ford coupes and roadsters because that's all we ever saw in the mainstream hot rodding mags.

Personally I appreciate and enjoy reading any magazine that tells the story like it really is, it's s refreshing change from the mainstream where the policy often seems to be, don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

That's also why I enjoy the Goodguys gazette and Street Scene more than other's because it's story by and about the people I know and love as my hot rodding family, not some filthy rich dude who's had Floyd design and Boyd supervise the manufacture and assembly of the parts for his way out creation that's more like a factory prototype than a genuine hot rod based on a real old car, dragged out of a barn, creek or rural junkyard.

Hahahahaha..Oh shit.... Its like WWF wrestling,I think,at least I hope that most people who watch that stuff know its bullshit but they dont care..Its entertaining... I used to here old war stories from my buddies dad, that I knew were complete bullshit,he was always the hero etc etc..But it was the way he told them, they were great,I could listen to them over and over again..for hours he'd go on..Personally I think the whole scene is entertaining in itself...Half the time I don't know whether or not if I'm at a Punk Rockers reunion or a car show...

I'll weigh in now. I took some time last night and flipped through issues 1 through 4. Yeah I have some problems with the mag, but it is defiantely getting better. These changes won't happen over night. If you have serious issues with the mag either start your own or step and help out.

Now my opinion. I don't like the scenester stuff much, it can be kind of funny, but I usually skip it. The artwork in the middle of #4 was iffy at best. No offense to the artist, but if this is the quality work they're going for, better to not submit anything, there are so many talented artist out there that could do a better job. just my $1.42
