Is it possible these days for the regular guy to run a dragster? Not trying to race all the time just run a gas dragster a few times a year.
One of the racers at my track bought an old rail and ran bracket with it, It got kinda spendy keeping up with all the rules and inspections and changing safety equipment, took him almost one season just to get his comp liscence. HA/GR is the way to go.
a dragster is by far the cheapest way to go fast. If you want to run 9s or 8s, it is pretty easy and cheap. you don't need to have the motor on kill so it is easy on parts too. You also don't have to screw with ladder bars, 4 links and crap like that. just play with the motor when you want to. good luck with whatever you do. I remeber years ago, Art Morrison Enterprises, used to market their Econorail style dragsters by saying, "Dragsters go faster, fit more classes, and break fewer parts". In the early 80's I had a ball with my old FED, wish I still had one, a new one, the old one probably would'nt certify; heck, it would'nt certify then if any of the tech people knew their stuff. ANRA is the thing for you my friend. www.anra.com the website is offline while making some adjustments, but will be back soon. we have 4 dragster classes to offer from slow to GO GO GO! we have 4 races this year at bakersfield. some of our most consistent winners have the most simple, economical dragsters on the grounds and are having a fun to dollar ratio that exceeds guys who's wallets are taking things a little more seriously.
There are groupes just for you want to do. Also there are old funny car races.Get with a FED group as a lot of them raced one back then.
YES it is VERY POSSIBLE!!!!!!!! Trust me on this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJtkSRLU-AQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg5Dx69f6e8
Ask lots of questions - look at lots of diggers - as you look more and more you'll start to understand what features you might want in yours. I built mine literally on a shoestring - several tax refund checks helped out substantially - other than that it was a matter of scrounging for parts - building near eveything I could myself - just to save a few bucks. Buying a used chassis may put you on the fast track to getting it done - just be real sure of what you are buying - lots of junk out there - LOTS of deals too!!!!! I met a ton of people in building mine - granted it took alot longer than I had planned, but I learned alot too. Good luck - with yours - no matter which road you choose to take. If you've never driven one - I wish I could explain the rush........
Why certainly. I run mine a few times a year when I am in the mood. Built all of it I possibly could. Fits current rules should someone give me a hard time in tech and it was fun to build. I dont have so much in it that I feel I need to go racing it everytime. I just go on special days or if one of my old pals says "why dont we go to the Drags friday night?" It is fun without being expensive. Don
If you want to go as quick and fast as possible for the least amount of money, a dragster is the only way to go. Period! They are also most simple and reliable. Back in the early 80's I bought my first FED roller for $1300, dropped in a street motor 454 and ran 9.40s @ 146 mph on gas. What a ride! You'll be hooked.
It's like anything else $ how fast do you want to go I helped my friend build his.it has a small block with stock vortec heads and a powerglide ran 6.0s he finished another rolling chassis and it will have 301ci chev vortec heads and is starting on a 3rd chassis. Another guy a fed he built with 324ci chev ported rhs heads tunnel ram 2x4 powerglide.plus I've heard of others building or buying feds. just contact the track that you want to run and they will help get it certified ,or build a ha/gr put do it
Dude you have no idea the rush you feel! Yes, you can do it on a budget, but speed is addictive and you will ALWAYS want to go faster. ( read that as MONEY!!) What ever you decide to do, just make damn sure it is safe!
I got in the driver seat of my first FED in 1959 at Lions Dragstrip and have been hook ever sence, nothing like it, I told my wife when I kick off just strap me in my FED and put me in the trailor and dig a big hole and plant me . RIP....( the bigest part of this car was built out of the swapmeet and racer junk and HARBOR FREIGHT TOOL's )
