  2. That car (or at least it's V.I.N. tags) could be parking all over the place. I bought a Chevy truck that had the V.I.N. swapped. I found out about it at gunpoint when I tried to regester it. L.A. sheriff are sooooooo nice to people.. The guy I bought it from never transfered it and got a red light camera ticket. It went to the reg. owner who contacted the police to advise them that he totaled the car and parted the rest out..

I can see it happening. I drive for a living, and can do 1000 miles a day without breaking a sweat. That includes stoping for meals and restrooms, and getting 8 hours sleep a night. [BTW, I'm not DOT, so dont freak, I'm legal]
If it was a team [2 people], and they drove straight and hard without stoping, a 2800 mile trip could be completed in 40 hours.
If the car was stolen at 6:00 am and hit the road immedeatly, and it was found and recovered at 11:00 pm the following evening, it's at least plausable.

That's stupid! Here in Oregon you can let a car sit for years and not pay a dime. Just start paying again when you are ready to get it back on the road. My car sat in the garage for 11 years with expired plates and didn't cost me a dime.
Now if it's a boat or RV they nail you for back years!

I fled CA almost 3 years ago now.
Had to go back for business twice.
Once for a bank screw-up. Handled fine once I was there in person.
Once for a DMV matter. It was a nightmare and they were unable to check for any other outstanding issues so I could make sure I was done with the ass clowns.

If for some reason I ever move back there (very doubtful), I will go on record here stating that my cars will not be registered there, and I will be bringing my guns.

Well, yes, you screwed up, so why the WTF? If not for things like this happening, you should at least want to be released in case the new owner crashes and/or injures someone- the "L" word, liability- and even more if it's going out of the country. Even easier now that you can do it online, and better, as it gives you a printout with the time when you sent it in- no "we didn't get it". I always do it now before the vehicle leaves my possession, just in case. I had a guy a couple years ago that wanted to buy a Peterbilt 10 whl dump truck I had for sale, did not have a Class B license, and obviously had never driven a truck before, but was determined to drive it home. Had the release printed out 20 min before he left.
Yes, the CA DMV can be a pain- but once you learn to play by their rules, and yes, pick the office you go to, it's a lot less painful- but you have to do your part. And like a woman or your hungry pet cat, they'll raise hell with you if you ignore them

  12. I'm soooooooooooooo glad I left that state about 12 years ago - don't miss this shit one bit!

I didn't know you had to get a Non-Op at the front-end of a non-registration period . . . so a couple years later when I went to register my hotrod -- had to pay all the Bullshit back-registration. They said "how are we supposed to know that you weren't driving it?". It is ALL about the money - and now that the state is completely upside down, they'll be bleeding the shit out of any poor bastard that has a job, owns property, drives a car, buys anything and just plain ole' fucking breathes the air.

Yes sir -- glad I got the hell out!

Even though Ohio sucks we dont have any of this carp yet,you sell a car here and dont have to let anyone at the BMV know. If you bought another just transfer the tags and you are done, you can let them sit for years and back tag fees but if you do have them tagged you might have to show proof of insurance if the state sends you a letter.

Thats what I was thinking, you cant just load up a car in a container and ship it. Theres ALOT of paperwork they have to do.

  19. Moved outa that shithole state over 12 years ago as the registration on my cars was killin me financially. The bird & the vette were over $300 each+ the insurance as best I remember, I had around 10 or so registered. Moved to oregon & registered all but the 67 rivy. I still get notices to register it(rivy) in cal & just chuck them. Now I'm wondering what they might try. The rivy sits out back with the cal plates still attached waitin to be sold or restored. Oh yeah oregon registration, license @ the time I believe was $35 or 45 ea for 2 years. Then I went back & got classic plates (25 years or older) for $45.00 ea one time registration & YOM plates & NEVER need to mess with them again. Don't even care to drive in Cal. The traffic & cops take all the fun out of it. Nice scenery & most people are fine but that's about it. The cops hasseled me back in the 50s jus cause they could. Single livin in Belmont Shore drivin a 48 harley & 55 vette got stopped weekly just to check registration & license. They didn't need cause then just pull you over if they felt like it. Didn't get any tickets except for one time I only had the driving lights on the harley and it was parked but got a ticket any way. OH got one on it for a forsale sign as it was parked on the street. The thread would be too long so will pass on relating the rest of the BS experiences for now.

Lived in CA until 1979. I had a business there and when the state came up with a box tax I decided to leave. I paid a trash company for trash removal but I guess the state didn't make enough money on them so they came up with a tax for any business that recieved their product in boxes, yeah I recieved my product in boxes so I had to pay their damn tax.

I live in Montana and can go tp the DMV and register or license a vehicle in less than 15 min's. Takes me longer to write the check than them to do their thing.

BTW; all trailers and all vehicles over ten years old get perment plates as long as you own it no cost for registration or taxes.

Oh yeah, I have NEVER been back to CA since I left.

Hmmm.. I have two trailers. Both on permanent plates. No tax etc. If you walk into the DMV and say I want to register a car and the gal says wheres your paperwork and you go Huh? Then expect problems. I've never had a problem with the DMV here. But then when I go there I have my paperwork ready.

Donnda. You haven't missed anything since you left. Things are still miserable. Life is unbearable. Pleas pass that on to all the easterners who want to move out here. Radiation, smallpox, anthrax. Tell'em anything. Just keep them out of here.

The problem is that our federal and most state governments don't realize that you can't tax the raw materials, tax the labor, tax the delivery, tax the shipping containers (boxes), tax the electricity, tax the water, tax the sewers, tax the sale, tax the purchase, tax the license, tax the fuel, ad nauseum.

How is that working for all of us?

We are really due for a fundamental change in how much governments spend, and on what.

It is to bad that ca. DMV is f**ked just follow the rules. When you sell vehicle do not send your original copy of sale in. Make a copy Then tear off the bottom half of ownership certificate put it in safe place keep it till you die. Keep the buyers name and address phone number and the amount (sold for) in case you get challenged by DMV. I use AAA when sell or registering, no waiting or dealing with f***en state employees at DMV .Take the buyer with you and do the transfer immediately. THE COST OF MEMBERSHIP IS WORTH IT AND TOWING INCLUDED.
