Technical F1 backing plates to 5 on 4 1/2?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Richie R, Feb 9, 2014.

  1. Hello Hambers, I have F1 complete brake drum setup I will be using on my A RPU.
Due to very limited rim choice I would like to convert it to 5 on 4 1/2. As I need new brake drums because they are well undersized for safe use, is there another hub and drum setup thank can be easily fitted to the F1 backing plates that already has 5 on 4 1/2.
Will be changing the bearings so I can fit to Model A spindles.
    Thanks all

I don't think there is another hub and drum setup that will bolt on. However, I think there is enough room to redrill the hubs down to 4 1/2. The other option is a set of wheel adaptors, but they can really screw with your backspacing. If I am wrong, I am sure some one will correct me.

    Good Luck.

Know anyone with a vertical mill and a rotary table? Piece of cake with those two items. If no one private then most any machine shop should be able to handle it in short order.

Skip the adaptors and just redrill the pattern.

If you have a good machine shop near you can get them redrilled.. That's your cheapest/ strongest bet. Not everyone has a good machine shop near them though.

  7. Thanks, was hoping I can find another hub as if this car of mine is to go through engineering required for full rego. Having redrilled hubs and drums is grounds for rejection.
If I can find blank drums and have them drilled I might have a chance?
A few other new threads on F1 brakes that have given me ideas.

I dont think you can find a 4 1/2" bolt pattern rim that has a center hole big enough to fit on a pickup hub

I swapped my rear end to a 60 ford starliner 9" and used the Chrysler hubs with gm disc brakes to get to 4 1/2" pattern
