I'm ***embling the 1950 F1 brakes I'm fitting to my Modified - do the front brakes have the self adjusting mechanism fitted (the one with the cable and the ratchet) like the rears or is that omitted on the front? The diagrams show it omitted but I parts in the rebuild kit.
F-1 trucks didn't originally have self-adjusting brakes; but you can add the self-adjusting hardware that was used on the early '60s F-100s.
Thanks. I have the hardware. I just wasn't sure whether it is fitted to the front brakes or not. I have fitted it to the rear because all the ***embly instructions show it fitted. None of the ***embly instructions show it fitted to the front. I should say that over here in North West England it's a bit difficult to find an F1 truck to check how it was done or speak to an F1 owner to get advice.
The Bendix style F1 brakes are self energizing but not self adjusting. Self adjusting brakes came out in 66 on the ford half ton trucks.
But the self adjusting mechanism can be fitted to earlier brakes? I've done that at the rear. Can it be done for the front?
Quite a few guys in our Group have converted to self adjusting, easiest way is go on the rockauto.com site and look up the shoes for your F1 if you click on the part number it will show what mid sixties Fords used the same shoes, then get the matching hardware and adjuster kits for that application.
Thanks - I thought that would be the case. The new brake shoes have all the correct drillings for self adjusting parts
Having just gone through my own F1 brakes front and rear, I get the feeling you are looking at the emergency brake hardware – not "self adjusting" hardware. And that would be on the rear only.
No - it's the cable, quadrant and ratchet. Definitely the self adjuster and not the handbrake mechanism. I fitted that to the rears already.
I sent a 'Conversation" to Flthd31, but wondered if anyone has made the Lincoln 12" diameter brakes, self-adjusting? Thanks Jim
The Wilson Welding finned aluminum backing plates are shown set up as self-adjusting since they don't have a slot for the adjuster. Pretty sure the rest of the stuff is the same as he uses on his steel backing plates. Looks like GM style stuff. Another option, the self-adjusting hardware from mid '60s IHC brakes may work, too.
