Awhile back I was talking to someone on here about F1 engines with no cams and could not find the video at the time. The discussion was about the "plasma" that shows above the injectors at full throttle. Here is a Youtube video showing that. This is a Renault engine. These engines turn around 18K rpm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2i***ocYZw
It may be OT on this board but if the sound of that Renault at full song don't bring a smile to your face, check your pulse. This year F1 mandated a max rpm of 18,000 but only a few years ago they were screaming down the straights at 19,400 rpm. For those not familiar with em, they make close to 900 horsepower from 2.4 litres and depending on who you talk to, idle at around 7000 rpm. Truly engineering masterpieces. Thanks for the clip.
They have cams, but no valve springs. They use pneumatic power to close the valves. They are so secretive I haven't seen what contains the air, no valve bounce at high RPM
