Hey all, Brand new to the H.A.M.B. and got a question or two for the group. I'm putting together a '49 F-1 and have a '49 F6 parts truck. The F6 is in much better shape so I want to harvest as much of it as possible, but I'm not sure on a couple things. I know the steering boxes are different sizes, but I'm perfectly able of doing the fab work to adapt the F6 box and pitman arm, etc. to the F1. Any advantage to this? I know I can probably sell the F1 box for more $$ to further fund my project. Next: I'm using the F6 doors and hood. I know the outer fenders are different, but are the inner fenders the same? The F6 ones are nicer, but I haven't taken them off yet to compare closely. Just curious. Thanks!
F6's don't have front shocks. The inner fenders are the same but on the driver side you need to cut out the area for the upper shock mount. The outline is there just need to cut it out. Passenger side should have the shock pocket in the removable panel on the lower half so you don't have to worry about that side.
As far as determining the ratio, I'll also have to factor in the larger sector diameter too, correct? A larger diameter circle that turns as many times as a small one "covers more ground" so to speak, correct? I know I'd have to use the F6 Pitman arm, but will it connect to the F1's drag link? In other words, is the joint the same size? Also are they the same length? I suppose I'll need to determine proper length once I determine pitman arm movement lock to lock at the drag link end... Maybe I'm over complicating things...
Just use the F1 box, sheesh! How much time are you willing to spend fabricating and researching just to save a few bucks.
