I have a F1 steering box and am about to cut the flange off for my A v/8 project. What are most folks using for a flange to weld on the modified steering box? Any one have a pattern?
    Thanks,
    jim

I believe Dave Havlir, @house of fab here on the HAMB makes flanges for F1 boxes to go on a an A frame. I know he modifies the boxes for A-V8 conversions. Give him a shout he can help you out i'm sure.

I made mine out of 3/8" plate but I'm wondering now if welding is the way to go. ?? I've heard good things about brazing.

That's what I was planning on using. Is there any specific design? Or is it what ever fits inside the model a frame?

I made mine a tringle with suitable rounded corners. Drilled the main hole with a hole saw after careful planning on the appropriate angle. I made it with as much surface area as possible.

?,Ok,back in 1960,Steve's 1930 Modal A sedan,we put a 292 Y-block V8 Ford in,an a F1 box. But we didn't do much other then cut one ear off the F1 box an mount it too were the "A" box had been, other then drilling some hole's there was little to no work. We did cut tube an shaft too make the steering wheel were he wanted it. Don't over think it. an we did add 47 brakes n master ,all around.

I don't have a body yet ,just trying to get some of the time consuming details done. Wanted to make the adapter, cut the flange off and get ready for welding when I get the body.

There are some good threads on splicing a model A flange to the later box.

I have no pics or patterns . I couldn't use the stock flange with my v8. Needed shortening.

adapting the A sounds like more work than making an adapter. Thanks for the input.

Welding steel to cast steel is not a big deal with the right rod.

I brazed the flange. I really think the box may be cast steel instead of cast iron. The braze is fine after a few years use.

Got my flange and a really nice aluminum dress-up/support flange for the outside of the frame from a member here by the name of Pinewood. Quality product with a detailed instruction sheet that was invaluable. Allows you to use his three hole flange with one of the holes on the new flange in a stock Model A steering box bolt hole. Worked out absolutely fabulous. FYI...the F1 box modifications and rebuild was one of the most time consuming parts of my build. Took eight weeks from start to finish even after I had all the parts. Cut off old mounting flange, chuck in lathe and turn down smooth, put whole box back together, make frame mods for new mounting flange, mock up box for position in body mounted on and properly aligned on frame with engine/trans/headers installed, tack flange thats bolted to frame to box, remove everything, bring to best ****ing welder you know to weld the steel flange to the cast box (no easy feat, let me tell you), completely rebuild box with new bearings, seals, bushings after sourcing parts made of unobtanium, re-install in frame, re-install headers, fabricate drag link, heat and bend steering arms to clear tie rod, etc and so on.

    Have fun,
    Andy

I used the flange off a 30-31 A box, they have the same sized shaft. I cut the flange off the F1 box and the Model A box, put new bushings in both. Then bolted the box in and marked the alignment and had it welded. then rebuilt the box. Did this with another one in the mid 90's with no problems. I think I found the information in the Vern Tardel " How to Build a Model A" book.
