Tried to mock-up a F1 steering box in a pinched 32 frame. Wacked off the original flange, turned down (relieved) part of the box, tacked new flange back on, put Tardel wedge on and bolted it up. Its going in a '30 body so i used the original steering column drop to line up the mass jacket.

Well, it didnt line up with the column drop, its about an 1 1/2" off towards the drivers door.

So, after staring at it for what seemed like hours, I came to the realization that, because the frame is pinched, it makes the angle of the Tardel wedge incorrect.

I guess the next thing to do is to put some spacers in between the Tardel flange and the flange i made, so it kicks the column back over to the column drop and figure out that angle and make a new Tardel type flange.

Anyone else been down this road?

Two steps forward one step back.

I would have set the body with dash &column drop on the chassis to tack the flange, also since you were going with the new flange I would eliminate the wedge, this help ?

Yup, believe wedge is for stock box in a stock frame.

Ditch the wedge, bust the tacks and set it all up again.

Yes, maybe you guys are right.

Maybe I dont need the wedge now.

Instead of welding the flange back on parallel the way it was, i can weld it on there at an angle, like the wedge....

    Right?

Plus, without the wedge in the way it will put the box closer to the outside of the frame, leaving more room where the header is. With that wedge in there, the box looks likes its going to touch the header.

why would you need a wedge when you are also welding a flange on?.. just weld on the flange to your frame angle ... you have to mock this up and do it in the car though.. i dont quite understand how you are doing this and then installing on car ...pics might help understand

thirtytwo is correct. You don't need the wedge when you weld the flange on at the correct angle. It also allows you to suck the box in closer to the frame like you mentioned as well.

Thanks, I think I over thought it....

    Still in rookie status

Looks like the Tardel wedge is not needed....makes sense now.
